Farewell to mentor

->> The most influential photographer, mentor and colleague in my life has, after 46 years in the business, decided to call it quits this week. Back when I was a college student, Bob taught me a lot about lighting, portrait and his biggest pet peeve, poor hand positions. He was stickler for detail and nitpicked every photograph in my book for well-over a year before he finally said, "Nice picture" and explained why. He was great at explaining both the logic and giving pointers for improvement. Our relationship was much like Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo on NCIS (occasional head slaps included which is probably why I like the show so much) on CBS. As they use to sing on All in the Family - those were the days ... wait ... did I just date myself???
At 83, he has finally seen the writing on his wall.
"Digital photography has hurt the traditional studio business, he said.
"Four or five years ago, there were 12 or 15 professional photographers listed in the Yellow Pages. Last year, they had 51 listed, and most of them had strictly a phone number and no studio," he said."

Happy trails, Bob! |

->> "There's too much Twittering and not enough speaking," he said. "I wish schools would teach elocution, but they don't."
Nice...Thanks Clark... |

->> Clark - that's certainly a name from the past for me. I had my senior portrait taken by him (many, many years and more pounds ago.) In fact, back then he had an exclusive deal with the yearbook - if you wanted your senior photo in the yearbook he had to take it. And yes, he was very particular about where you placed your hands.
As I recall, he would end most conversations with - "Think happy thoughts". I'll have to go find my yearbook now to check out his ad in the back (complete with a charactiture of him with baggy pants, camera hanging off his shoulder and glasses perched on top of his head)to verify the quote. |

->> Also, for those wondering about how long to hold on to their archives, I found this interesting:
"I have negatives back from 1965. I'm going to sell them for $10 an envelope, and (buyers) can have any of the proofs or negatives in them," he said. "If I sell them all, I'll be a millionaire, so tell the millions to come around."
I may have to send someone down to grab the negatives for my senior portrait- the print on my mother's wall is a bit faded. |
