->> The later set up seems pretty interesting for sure. I however would worry about messing up the shoe on the still camera. So it makes me think that mounting the second camera on top of a flash bracket would return the same result.

I clamp a little Casio EX-FH20 to my monopod and roughly "co-sight" it with my Sigma 120-300/f2.8 during football season. I have gotten some great slo-mo web clips on video along with still shots:
