D3s blinking "Err"
Greg Kendall-Ball, Photographer, Assistant

->> So, sometime between shooting a visitation around 7 p.m. Sunday, and shooting a lady who makes jam at 10 this morning, my D3s decided to take a vacation.
It worked perfectly yesterday, on both a 17-35 2.8 and a 300mm 2.8.
I did not drop my camera, I did not strike it against a hard surface, I did not submerge it in water. I placed it on my table last night, and picked it up this morning, but when I went to the jelly lady, the screen was completely dark (as if the Pv button had been pressed, with the 17-35 locked on f/22). It took two frames, and then started blinking "Err" on me. Removed the battery, the watch battery, did the two-button reset....and nada.

Anything else to try before sending it off to NPS?

->> Greg -
Take the lens off and check to see if the shutter looks right. Sounds very much like a blown shutter, which can happen without much - or no - warning...

->> A blown shutter? Yikes. According to EXIF data, the most recent shot was only number 8,210. :(

->> Blown shutter is a decent guess although it wouldn't cause the screen to go dark. Pop the lens off and look to see that the mirror isn't stuck partially up. Make sure that you aren't in live view or some other funky setting. Try a different lens. Try both an Af-s and a straight AF lens. When I blew the AF board on my D2X I could still use the body with AF but not Af-s glass. I was able to finish a job by switching the to an AF. The second I mounted the Af-s lens the camera would err.

Try switching the setting that prevents you from shooting without a card present.

You can also try reloading your firmware.

Sadly any or all of these won't keep you from having to send in the body. Barring corrupt firmware or a bad CF all the rest will still require service.

->> I just have a quick tip before you send it off. Sorry for the late response. One time I had the same thing happen to me, the problem in my case is that the aperture had somehow gone from the maximum aperture of f/22 and slide off just 1/2 an f stop. This caused me to have an err message and might explain your dark photos. Give that a quick check and make sure you're locked into the correct position.

Also, if that is not a solution, sometimes the metal electronic coupler pins can get damaged. One time I had a coupler pin fall off and that caused and error message.

Good luck!

->> Turns out it was not a blown shutter after all.

Honestly, I have no idea what the problem was, or how it was resolved, all I know is, the camera functions perfectly now.

I had brought the camera to the newsroom to ship off to NPS. I had just demoed the problem to fellow photographer Tommy Metthe.

I placed it in his hands. He touched nothing but the shutter...and voila- It worked.

In Tommy's words: "I have Jesus hands."

Maybe something got bumped around, and then got bumped back into place, I have no clue...but the flashing "Err" message went away, and it's working like a champ.

Tommy says he'll lay hands on any of your gear for a nominal fee. He's out shopping for a Benny Hinn suit right now...

->> Screw the gear.... how are his skills with water? I have a few barrels in the backyard that I'd like him to touch.... Red if he takes requests.

->> can the card be read?

i would not be reassured, alas, by your obervation "it works perfectly now" -- think a check out by a service outfit is indicated.

just my experience...
