Looking to buy a new tripod
Daniel Goncalves, Photographer

->> I have a Velbon carbon fiber tripod which has been nice and light but looking into getting something a bit more solid. Feels like my Velbon will fall over sometimes. It feels fragile.

Also considering one that could be tall enough that I could extend up to a level where I could get on a two step ladder.

Heaviest setup would be a 1d w 400/2.8.

Would be good to have strong enough legs I can super clamp one or two bodies to.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Daniel

->> They are heavy, which is the whole idea, but the Gitzo aluminum stix with the 1" legs (I think this is the Studex series) will support a 400/2.8 on top and Super Clamps on the legs.

Carbon Fiber stix are light and very portable, but I would hesitate to hang a super clamp on the legs.

Don't consider a tripod at its absolute extension of the legs and height of the column as necessarily stable. Max extensions tend to be the weakest configuration, consider using a tripod at less than max limits for longer shutter speeds. If you are using high shutter speeds, then absolutely stable isn't necessarily essential.

Don't scrimp on the head. Go for a larger rather than smaller head. I like either ball heads with a pan movement, or a simple ball head. The Leitz Ball & Socket head is one of my fav's.

->> I'm currently using a Manfrotto 055XPROB and 488RC2 combination. It's a very solid tripod and full extension would put the viewfinder at roughly seven feet. I can't however speak for the strength of the legs against a super clamp.

->> Thanks Brad. I'm also happy for suggestions on used big/heavy tripods I can find on ebay.

Anyone?
