->> Back in the NBA/NHL Playoffs this past April, I was talking with one of the paper photographers and they mentioned the class they took about using the iPhone, but they wish they had their 300mm 2.8 lens and asked,"Now how do I attach this??"
Well, I guess we have an answer now.
Now I want to see the Sigma 200-500mm with an iPhone attached!!! |

Sigggghhhhh.... Can't imagine it won't be long, Vince. At May's state high school track meet there were at least four credentialed reporter/photographer types using iPhones/camera phones to shoot stills and video at the finish line right along side of us folks with long glass on monopods and a second body slung on one shoulder. |

| ->> I learned the hard way never to bet against technology given enough R&D dollars and time anything is possible. However given the size of the professional market I sincerely doubt Apple, HTC,Rim, Samsung, or LG (the major suppliers of smartphones)will invest in a sensor platform that has enough photo space to render images that will be of sufficient quality for general coverage of sports. There are exceptions, but it is not going to be technically easy or inexpensive. Remarkably video is allot easier to do than stills in this case. Decisive moment with a click to capture time of a smartphone is not even worth commenting on. |

Richard:
There are small papers (and big ones as well) or papers that lack the budget to send a photographer, hire a freelancer or send a second staff person in addition to sending a reporter to cover an event. The fact they have in an image(s), smart phone or P&S or dreb, that will look good enough on newsprint or their website, decisive moment/artsy or not, satisfies their needs and works within the budget constraints. That's the reality of today.
One of the four papers I mentioned above, is one I approach every year and is the only daily within a metro market of 300K people. They lacks the editorial budget license 3-4 images (which all they usually run from a state event) from us let alone a salary, food/hotel and benefits for three days for a staffer.
At our state wrestling meet this past February, I saw more credentialed P&S than ever in the past. They were moms/dads shooting for their community paper or reporters whose publications didn't have a photographer to send and could not afford our service. I expect to see the same if not more next year. Change isn't on the way, it is here. |
