PC guy needs iPad info

->> I have been looking at the archives, but have not seen anything that really answered my question. So, my apologies if it has been covered already.

I am thinking of getting my wife an iPad for her birthday. We have always been PC based, and the Mac world has always been foreign to me/us.

I went to the local Macstore, and could not really get straight answers from them. Perhaps I just misunderstood what they told me, or maybe I asked the questions in a way they did not understand what I wanted to know. You know, throw in a South African accent, together with having lived on the East Coast, then Texas, then West Coast, throw in having lived in the Middle East; and the accent gets a little muddled up.

My questions were the following: As a photographer I may want to use my wife's iPad to show my portfolio. I know there is an app called Portfolio for iPad or something like that and I know it apparently is very good. My question is, how do I get images from my computer to the iPad? I was told I would have to email it to myself... (Really??) I asked whether one could use a Bluetooth connection, or an USB connection via the dock, and connect to an external drive, and was told it could not do that. I asked the person if there was any simple straight forward way to get a file onto the iPad, and was told there is no straight forward way of doing this. If this is true, ... how on earth do photographers make this work for themselves....? Please enlighten me, and tell me it is not true, and there are straightforward ways to get files from your computer onto the iPad.

I know my wife would do the odd word processing, and she would want the doc to be saved as a MS Word document (suffix .doc). I know that would not be a problem. However, if she has an existing .doc document on her PC that she wants to import to the iPad, how would she do that...? Please tell me there is a straightforward way?

I know, lots of questions... Somebody please tell me iPad is more versatile than the person at the Macstore made it out to be....

->> You just create a folder of images in the ipads directory on your computer where images on the ipad are saved to the computer then sync. The new folder should be added to the ipad. The portfolio app should be able to select anything from the ipad library.

->> Also search the itunes apps website for office apps, there are numerous apps, check the thread on ipad/iphone apps for some suggestions. The ipad can essentially do almost everything the PC does, right now, I'm only touching my pc to edit/transmit photos and view Flash based websites lol. I can do some of the transmitting with the ipad but it's not practical yet.

Camera connection kit you can download images straight from camera or using SD card. I'm a PC user and now I can almost run my entire business from the ipad. Invoicing apps, pdf apps that allow me to fill out pdf's and sign them digitally then email the file to client. Completely digital photo releases that the client signs on site and has a copy emailed directly to them. I use it all day without having to charge it, unless I watch video then it runs down a bit quicker.

->> I downloaded my father's pictures from his HP laptop to his iPad no problem. Like Derich said you do it all through iTunes that you download to your PC. You use the USB connection cable that comes with your iPad. I have heard there are MS Office apps that you can use to work in the iPad, but I've never tried it.

->> Sorry for all the questions, the guy at the Apple Store did not leave me with a warm fuzzy about this.

So, you have an area on your PC that would contain images for the iPad? Then you 'sync' via iTunes? What happens if you delete the images off your PC, and you attempt to 'sync' your iPad? Would that then delete the images from the iPad? And would this be the same for other file types, e.g. .doc files? I.e., would it require me to keep the images on my PC and in the same place, like it needs to do for iPods...?

I just want to be sure it would be easy and straight forward to get something from a PC to the iPad.

Thanks for all the posts, keep em coming!

->> Portfolio for iPad allows you to use a few things to get images.

http://ipadportfolioapp.com/

- Photos stored locally on the iPad, transferred through iTunes.
- Photos from a URL on the internet. (So you could setup a folder on your website and grab them).
- Using their custom loader software (unfortunately for you Mac only).
- Using Dropbox. My personal favourite method. Doesn't hurt to have your portfolio on a Dropbox account for access anytime either.

->> Wally...
I was in a similar situation in May. I was going to make a trip to WashDC and NYC to drum up some business and I didn't want to take my PC laptop to the clients so I decided to buy a tablet. I looked at all that were on the market. The iPad was highly recommended by colleagues -- who happened to also own Macs.

I went to the Apple store in Salt Lake with my PC in tow to have the Mac reps configure the two so they would work together. I bought one and went through five reps without a solution. One took a look at my laptop, said she hadn't touched a PC in six years, and then turned and walked away. I was finally told to make an appointment with their guru people and in the meantime uninstall all Apple based software (even Quicktime) on my laptop and reinstall. I came back and one of their top people couldn't help that much. The problem was using iTunes and that to add or remove images the photos had to match on both the tablet and PC to sync. If I load images into the iPad and then transfer the PC copies to an external hard drive and erase them on the PC, then the sync is lost. After five hours of my time I gave up, returned the iPad, got my money back and went to my second choice -- the Motorola Xoom.

I've had the Xoom for a couple months now and it does everything I wanted. Even though the Honeycomb operating system is based on Linux, when I tether it to my PC the tablet shows up as an external hard drive. All I have to do is drag and drop folders. Or individual images can be added or deleted with a click. There is no sync like with iTunes; your sync function is your brain.

The downer to the Xoom is the Album app that comes with it. Uploaded images are displayed in reverse order most of the time. The sort doesn't go by file name and I have yet to figure it out. My solution was to upload QuickPic from the Android store. Works great and is free. And with using File Manger HD (also free), you can manage the images by renaming them. QuickPic shows them in alphabetical order.

Yes, Apple has many more apps than Android. But how many do you need? And most geared for photographers are offered for both platforms -- such as LightTrac which tells you where the sun and moon are during any time of the day atop a Google satellite map of your subject.

As to Internet connectivity, I bought the WiFi version instead of being attached to Verizon or AT&T via contract. With the WiFi I just connect to my Sprint smartphone with its Hotspot feature turned on. I get up to 4G speed at a dollar a day. When I don't need Hotspot I turn it off and no longer pay for the service until the next time I need it.

Would I buy the Xoom again right now? Probably not. Since buying mine Acer has come out with its version -- the Iconia A500. It has the same features and does the same thing the Xoom does but with two differences. First, it is $100 less and Costco carries them which makes them cheaper when you factor in your annual rebate. And second, the Acer model comes with a full-size USB port that you can plug flash drives or stand alone mini-hard drives into. This is a huge feature because you don't have to drag and drop portfolio images between it and the PC. If you have a flash drive with a set of photos, you just plug it in and display on the fly.

If you're an Apple user and are use to the iTunes structure, then an iPad is a natural step. The colleagues who are Mac love theirs. But if you're a PC person I would recommend the Acer or Xoom because of the simplicity of file sharing; iTunes will drive you nuts. At least it did for me.

->> Wally no problem,
you can email the photos to your ipad. You can also put them on a cf card, buy the connector kit online and then just plug it in to your iPad. there are also a few ftp aps available where you can ftp your files to the ipad... there are multiple possibilities.

->> +1 to Portfolio for iPad ... a bit pricey as far as iOS apps ... but works flawlessly ...

... wait ... there's more ... iCloud and wireless syncing to name two ...

The Photo sync feature coming with iOS5 ... to be released this fall will simplify photos on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to the extreme ... save a photo to your desktop ... it will be available instantly on your mobile devices via iCloud services ...

Shoot an image on your iOS mobile device ... it's already on your desktop/laptop when you return home ... iCloud will hold your 50 most recent photos ... so if you want it to remain permanently on your mobile device, you just "save" ... desktop/laptop computers images are saved to the designated directory automatically as they likely have more storage space ...

Plus ... iOS 5 will alos offer syncing over WiFi ... no more tether! Though you will need to be running OS X 10.7 Lion to use this feature ...

This is a good video covering the feature set offered in iOS 5

->> You can do all the stuff that you are wanting to do with a PC/iPad 2. I have the iPad 2 and have had all the iPhones since they came out. I have always used a PC until just recently and switched to the Mac.

There are numerous apps out there to choose from. The one I use is called PhotoSync.
