| ->> Was just informed my 2.4 Core Duo fried the logic board. $800 to repair. Pretty sure its just the graphics card but seems it's integrated. Bummer..... looks like new. |

->> Sorry to hear that.
I put my 17" to rest a while back. It seems the way I held it when I moved it when it was open caused it to flex which ultimately caused the damage.
I just bought a new 13" today. :)

| ->> If you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can pull your drive, wipe it and sell your MacBook for parts on eBay. I bet you will still get a couple hundred bucks for it. |

->> Bryan,
Sorry for your loss, but if that is the model I'm thinking of, they had a known problem with the NVIDIA video card on the logic board. They did a "silent" recall on those. Any that went bad during a specific time they would replace for free. Also you could get your computer tested at an Apple store and if it showed to have one of the bad chips they would replace it before it died on you. Unfortunately, the period of which Apple will replace for free is passed.
It's worth checking every now and then with sites such as macrumors which report on such things and I recall them having a piece about the end of that recall period and urging folks to get their computers tested before it was too late.
I know of this because a couple years ago mine failed on me while covering a PGA tournament. The local Apple Store, where I luckily had a friend at the Genius Bar, looked at it first thing the next morning and did the repair quickly. They then tested all of the laptops in my department and we found that only one of them did not require the logic board replacement. |

| ->> Brought me a new one in April right after they told me my Apple Care expired and I couldn't renew it. Sorry to hear that. But the new one I brought has to be the BEST laptop around... |

->> I had the exact same thing happen to my 2.4 Core Duo. Fortunately, it was still under warranty, so it was covered. But so sorry to hear that...
When it happened, I was worried it had something to do with the hard drive as well, but it was just the logic board. I hope it's the same for you.
Good luck! |

->> You could do the logic board replacement yourself...check the iFixIt website:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Late-2008-an...
Definitely not for the faint of heart.
But if you check the parts list...a new logic board is $799. Might as well buy a new machine.
(Had the same problem with my company-issued MBP. But Apple did the repair under their quasi-recall.) |

->> My 2008 15" Macbook Pro's logic board crapped out last week. My Apple Care expired in May. I called them to see if there was anything they could do being so close to my expiration.
After only about 5mins on the phone and a few kinds words, my logic board is being replaced at no charge.
I must have lucked out with the agent:) |

->> Hitting the Genius Bar at 5 today to throw myself on the mercy of the Mac Court. If I have no luck may try the Cooking the Books fix.
Thanks to all for the suggestions and sympathy.
A side note : My youngest son used his student discount to purchase a new 13" pro this week which I will be borrowing in the interim much to his chagrin. |

->> Sorry for your loss Bryan, but at least you got it replaced. I have a 17" and love the screen size, see you went with a 13" this time will you share why such a change in size.
I use mine a lot for video also and felt I needed the extra large screen. |
