->> Just wondered who out there has insured their equipment, who you insure through, and what your premiums and deductibles were.
And, if you are insured, what sorts of things are/aren't covered under your plans? |

->> For what type work do you need the insurance for? A studio can be done through standard companies who won't touch you if you're doing war photography. Are you a member of any professional organizations? Ones like NPPA offer group rates if you're a member.
And do you need just equipment coverage or liability too?
You need to be more specific in your needs. |

| ->> Uh, Doug, I was asking *you* if you were insured, etc. ... And why am I suddenly overcome with an intense feeling of deja vu? |

->> Buying insurance is like getting a house, apartment, car or pricing a job. What works for me won't necessarily work for you or someone else. Some photogs drive beaters, others a Prius, others a Mercedes; me, I have a pickup truck with a camper shell because of all the gear I take to jobs.
That's why I asked for more specifics for me and other SS members so we can help you chose the right direction for your needs. |

->> Paul,
I am with Commerce, not exactly sure of the details but it is a bussiness policy, premium is around $800, $250 deductable for $70K with $2Mill liability. it also includes replacement costs, meaning if my Mark IIN dies I will replace it with a Mark IV.
The one thing you DO NOT want to do is add any gear to your homeowners. Years ago when I started I was just going to add it to my homeowners policy but since it is professioanl use they wanted NOTHING to do with me. they actualy added a rider to my homeowners for incendental occupancy for the handfull of customers that come by to pick up orders.
get a totally seperate polciy with Liability insurance.

| ->> Hill & Usher is my agent. My policy is placed with The Hartford. One thing that I learned this year was that the Inland Marine portion (gear coverage) was only covering my gear in the US.... Took 3 days but underwriting changed that section to cover my gear worldwide. I spent 20 minutes on the phone with the underwriter and as a result I not only picked up global coverage but he tweaked the coverage and saved me a few bucks too! |

->> Paul,
Similar to what Eric said I had to change my policy recently when I found out the $75K in gear was what I was covered for while it is at the main location, my office. I was only covered for 10K when it was in transport any place. So make sure to ask what the limit is when stored on location and what it is when in transport, or in your car, etc. Also add the rider for full replacment coverage.

->> I used Hill & Usher, made one small claim and rates went up next year about 40%. Got turned on to the insurance company through PPA. You have to be a member of PPA to join it, but so far its been great dealing with them. Rates are based on the value of your equipment, and your rate won't go up even with claims, $100 deductible. I have about $27k insured and it cost me about $450 a year.

->> I use Ohio Casualty and carry a $250.00 deductible. I had a 1DIV work its way off a 70-200 that was on a rapid R strap and hit the track. Hit it just right and split it open. This was a Friday night and by the next Friday, had the new camera thanks to quick turn around time by the insurance company.
I believe my premium is around $600.00 a year. |
