Anyone Using a 13" Mac Book Pro for Video?

->> I am curious if anyone is using a Mac Book Pro 13" for video editing. If so, what application(s) and is the small screen a pain to work with? I need the small size for photo assignments but I'm wondering how the small screen is for vlog editing.

Thanks

->> I used my 13" MacBook (black plastic one) and used Final Cut Pro and of course iMovie. It was pretty cramped using FCP on the small screen but more than that was the lack of cpu horsepower by the laptop. I was forced to use it when my MacBook Pro was in the shop.

So yeah, you can do it. I find my 15" screen of my MBP small working in FCP too but don't have a bigger screen. What did help was a firewire external drive attached for my projects and scratch disk.

If you're only doing video for your blog you can get away with importing in ProRes Proxy format to save space and processing. You can always reconnect to the masters in case you want to go higher quality later. See here for the workflow:

An external monitor would certainly be useful but if I'm just trying to produce a quick hit vid, it's not that big a deal.

Honestly, I probably would have gone with the 15" but I got a good deal on the 13" and have been pretty happy with it. If anything, as I said, I'll probably spring for an extra monitor for at-home use.

Thanks, especially for the advice on the scratch disk. I'll be using it for minor vid work in the field but in my office I'll attach another monitor. I actually forgot that was an option.

Thank you

->> You should always (or at least as often as you can) use an external HDD for your scratch disc. Even on my MacPro with 8 cores and 16GB or RAM, I never use the OS drive as a scratch disk for FCP.
