Need Photo Pricing Assistance
Russell Rinn, Photographer

->> I work freelance for various newspapers and do not typically sell photos that appear in ads. However, I was called today by an business that wants to use one of my photos for the back cover of a HS Football program. (The subject of the photo is actually the son of the business owner who is a player on the team).

I have supplied booster clubs in the past at discounted rates, but not for commercial ads. This would be a typical ad supporting the team, but placed by the business.

Looking for what I should charge. I estimate the attendance for the 5 home games would probably be about 40,000 - 60,000 folks. Of course I'm not sure how many would sell. Another wrinkle is the son of the owner being a player.

I would appreciate some advice.

Thank you.

->> Russell- in order to come up with a fair price I need to know the press run of the program- not the attendance. This is how we figure out pricing. Also- how big will the image be in the ad, etc. Thanks.

->> Russel, I know you said you don't do a lot of commercial work, but you might want to pick up FotoQuote Pro 6 anyway. Pays for itself very quickly. http://www.cradocfotosoftware.com/

Brad: I have a message out trying to determine the print run. I hope to have it by tomorrow.

Phil: I thought about FtoQuote, but in 6 years this is the first instance I would have had a use for it.

Thanks.

->> Russell,

A big second for FotoQuote. In the meantime, this calculator might help a little:
http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

Something to think about with the calculator, though, is the rates might not be up to date. With FotoQuote, the results would be closer to current rates.

->> Russell,

You have two other important issues to look at before you get to the pricing stage. Student athletes' likenesses, under NCAA rules, can not be used to promote, market, endorse or advertise a product. Many state high school associations have the same or a similar rule.

If the kid just graduated and will never play NCAA or NJCAA sports after high school, then he does not have to worry about it. If he has a year or two of state eligibility you need to check with the state association to make sure the use by the advertiser will be kosher with their rules. Second, you or the advertiser (I usually put the burden on the advertiser) must secure all necessary model release (any individual that is identifiable in the image sign one), any necessary property releases and trademark releases (a license to have a company's marks in the photo).

Once you secure all the necessary releases and determine if the use will not affect the student-athletes college or prep eligibility, then you should worry about pricing. If the advertiser's son plans to have a college sport career, you can contact the NCAA Clearinghouse for exact rules and apply for a waiver. The high school association may have a waiver process as well.
