->> Got this email today...
"Hi Chuck, saw the photos on the paper's website from this weekend's XXXXXXX, and rather than purchase one, I was hoping you might be willing to share the photo of the guy XXXXXXXX, since I am that guy?
Please let me know if you can email me an untagged copy."
Responses?
Thought everyone could have fun with this.
Happy Monday!!!! |

->> Just keep it simple and honest. Something like:
Hi XXXXX, Thanks for your interest in the photo. I do not own the photos that I take for the paper. The paper does. Because of this I do not have the right to email them. If you are interested in purchasing a photo from the newspaper please go to hhtp:/xxxxx.xxx where you can buy one.
Thanks |

->> I went from writing an email reply (a long time ago) to sending an email with text that I copy and paste in which states basically "Thank you for your interest in my work, if you would like to purchase a print please call my office at ..." Now, as bad as it sounds I hardly ever reply to people asking for freebees.

->> I got one today that goes even further- I shot a girl's basketball game yesterday.
The aunt of one of the players in a shot on the sports cover wrote and asked...not for me to email her a copy of the photo, but for me to send her a copy of the whole paper! |

->> I received this just the other day.
It was fun to read the story about the Hickory Stick Golf Tourney and see the pictures. I was wondering if I could use a digital copy of the photo you took of Jess Alumbaugh and me on my facebook page. |

| ->> If he had just left out "rather than purchasing one" I would have happily emailed him a low-res photo with permission from my DoP. Then again, my paper only offers commercial licensing of photos but does not provide a way for the public to purchase photos. |

->> Depends who it is, and the circumstances surrounding the photo (might be a funeral for one of their loved ones).
Other times it may be someone that helped you with an assignment.
I am sure the paper gives you ability to make judgement decisions like this as long as you keep them in the loop.
Garrett's comment was good about emailing a low-res with the DoP's permission.
There is no blanket answer, but you can try to be civilized all the time. |
