->> Well, I know most of you don't know me. But there are a few out there that do. I just wanted to say thanks to Sportsshooter.com for all the fun times we had.
I remember one night during a sporting event Brad told me about this little website and that it would go live that evening. I went home, signed up and loaded my favorite sports photo. It was a duck that landed in a pool during a swim event.
I would be Sportsshooter.com member # 37. Now there are more than 9,600 members.
My membership will expire in a few days so I just wanted to take this moment to say thank you to Brad, Jason, Grover, Joe, and of course Mr. Hanashiro. |

->> The reason is simple. I don't update as much as I use to. Many of my friends on this website our also on facebook so I can I can update my friends that way.
Also I'm trying to purchase a new home so any money I can save is going towards that.
I still got two more days left so if you think I'm an idiot. You got two days left.
And George. I know where you live. And I'm sorry. ha! |

Like Mr Royal I don't often comment, and despite the fact that we haven't met I think you should stay, too. I hope I am not too late!
Best of luck either way. |

->> It's funny -- I actually had sort of pre-written this in my head before JC posted his reasoning ... so, I'm sort of not in line with his thinking ... but, what the heck, here goes ...
I can totally relate. It's funny -- all this social networking and such is supposed to be bringing us closer together, but at least in my experience, it drives us apart. Let me explain.
Like a lot of folks on here, I'm sure, the Internet is a relatively new thing for me, as far as life experience goes. I don't think I even went online until my sophomore year of college, which would have been 1999 or so. Obviously the Internet had been around a while before that, but back then it was still really basic. I honestly don't even remember what it was like.
It wasn't until maybe the mid-to-late 2000's (weird to say that) that I feel like it's closer to what we have now. We're all connected. We can all see each other's work, engage in conversations. I have solid acquaintances I've made that I've never met in person, and it's entirely possible that I may never meet them.
Anyway, to point, I don't know about the rest of you, but this sort of e-Life that I lead on the Web is annoying … and lonely. I miss talking to people in person (at least on the phone), and I find I'm starting to do it more and more; reaching out to people I don't know all that well, or re-connecting with former colleagues and friends I've made along the way.
I find that I also don't always like my e-Persona, either. I used to criticize the Internet for giving people unbelievable balls; that is to say, folks would say things to each other that they'd never do in person, make sense? This site (any message board, really) is a poster child for that. I'm guilty of it on here, certainly, and other photo communities I frequent. I actually recently bailed on one that I've been with a long time because I didn't like what I'd become, at least in the eyes of others, and in some ways via my own actions, too.
So I guess the point I'm trying to make is, I understand why people feel the need to disconnect. There are times where I wish there was no Internet and that my life was simpler and more pure, as it was in my youth. And I'm not an idiot -- the Internet is a great thing that's helpful. It basically made my career; I became a sort of personality on this site and others, and that helped me network in a way I never could have before.
But honestly, I resent that. I feel like it makes me flawed in a way. Any of you all ever have that feeling? Dunno -- there's a whole host of deep-seeded emotional shit I carry that feeds into that, but in a pure sense, don't you all wonder how much different your life, your career, would be without all these 1's and 0's? Could it be better? Could you make the same achievements without the help of the cult of personality that comes from in a .com world?
I think about these things a lot lately. I have an eight-month-old son, and I wonder what kind of life he'll lead when he's my age. Will everything be even more wired and isolated? I hope not. I hope the Internet just evolves into a tool that helps us get closer in a way that's real, intimate.
I just hope he calls people. Writes letters. Craves face to face.
Anyway, whatever. Totally not what Juan Carlos was going for, but it's something I've thought a lot about lately, and I wonder what you all think.
Cheers,
- gerry - |

| ->> PS -- @Luke, interesting bit of trivia. That song was one of many used in a recurring leitmotif on The Simpsons. Whenever a character would have to call some sort of hotline or something, the hold music always reflected what was going on. "Baby Come Back" is what's playing when Marge has to call Child Protective Services to get her children back when they were sent next door to be fostered by the Flanders. Also, Patsy Cline's version of "Crazy" is what's playing when Marge has to call to get Homer out of an insane asylum. They did it a lot, actually. If you listen to the commentaries on the DVD's, it sounds like it was one of the creators/writers favorite gags. |
