Light absorbing black background?
Heston Quan, Photographer

->> I'm looking to find a large one piece (at least 10' wide) light absorbing black fabric background. I just don't like the black muslin I have, I want to cut down on post processing.

A friend of mine bought one for his studio and I have used it and really liked the result. Levels adjustment was minimal. I asked him where he got it from, but he can never remember where he buys anything or the name of things. Great. I tried searching on google, but it's hard to find specialty items without knowing the exact name of what you are looking for.

I've looked at buying Duvetyne, but I can't find it in anything greater than 60" wide.

Is black velvet a better option?

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

->> I would suggest black velvet or felt. I have used both and they work great. Also, if you are still having problems, try using flags or gobos next to your lights to make sure you are controlling all extra light spill.

->> Black velvet all the way.. I have made my own - purchased 3 bolts and had them sewn together.

Another option is stage drapes made from black velvet.

Photek background in a bag.. I use two to give me 16x12

has some "pattern" to it (from creases) but disappears if not lit.
Looks like back ordered, so may have to hunt.
worked well for me for years...

Usually pretty inexpensive.

I have used them a lot and have never had a problem with them. I use the commando and am very happy with it. It is a bit heavy so make sure you have a good background stand to hold it.
Good luck.
