->> Sad news, Reuters staffer Shaun Best passed away in Montreal last night.
Shaun was an awesome sports shooter and even better as a person. Always willing to help you out with technical problems and a great guy to talk to about anything.
Condolences to his family, his Reuters family and all the photographers that sat and stood next to him on the courts, rinks, sidelines and fairways. |

| ->> My condolences. I did not know Shaun personally but remember very well working with him at the US Open Tennis Championships in New York. Only 44 years old. How sad is that. |

->> I think a great testament has been the glowing remembrances being posted throughout the day today by a veritable who's who of North American sports photography on Shaun's Facebook page.
Funny how most of them focus on him a quality person before they remember the elite quality of his photography - a great reminder of what ultimately people take from our interactions on and off the field, and what really matters in the end...
I did not meet Shaun in person, but we had several conversations the past couple of weeks as he was my editor for the Lightning's playoff run as I shot for Reuters...with his professional yet approachable/friendly demeanor it was easy to see why the comments fit.

->> Thoughts and memories of Shaun:
When I first started covering the Montreal Canadiens for UPI, Shaun showed me the ropes of how to do lightning fast edits between periods (right from the shooting positions), and get them uploaded before the puck would drop for the next period. And back in the days of the Montreal Expos, Shaun let me know where the free hots dogs were available: late, after the shoot, when we were hungry and tired. Thanks, Shaun. I'll never forget the help you gave me, nor the incredible images you made - consistently, professionally, and timely. Rest well - I'm still in shock. And as your namesake, you truly were the Best. - Ed. |

| ->> I was floored when I learned of Shawn's passing. I was shooting alongside of him just last week, and though we weren't extremely close friends, I always respected his work and him as a person. All the best to Shawn and his family. |

| ->> Shaun was one of the best guys out there. He will be missed both for this excellent photography - and more importantly his excellent friendship and generosity to those of us who had the honor of working beside him. |
