mapping CS5 actions to MAC function keys

->> Haven't found any solution in over 2 hours searching the web. I'm migrating from PC to MAC and am not able to map PS CS5 actions to my MAC wireless keyboard function keys. For example, F10-F12 still control speaker volume. What I've found online is that you have to change the keyboard system preferences to use all function keys as standard function keys. Still didn't help. Then I downloaded a utility called "FunctionFlip" which is supposed to select which function keys can be "flipped" to allow apps to use them and only perform their standard function when the fn key is pressed. Still no luck. The only keys I am able to assign to actions are F5 and F6. Has anyone else faced and defeated this issue?
Apologies in advance for posting a tech question here. My workflow has slowed to a crawl and I'm in a limbo state now where I'm doing some things on my PC and trying to move totally over to the MAC.
Thanks,
Gary |

->> If you're on a MBP, you have to use the function (fn) key while pressing the F# keys.
If not, what kind of keyboard are you using? |

->> Gary, here's a question for you:
What is more important to you?
-Using the F-keys as your keyboard shortcut for your actions?
-or having a keyboard shortcut for your actions?
Let's go ahead and solve this for the second option to get you keyboard shortcuts for your actions that don't involve the F-keys, which is easy enough to do inside Photoshop CS5 without having to change your computer's overall behavior or keyboard responses.
Let's say you've got an existing action titled "Shiny and Pretty" in your actions palette.
Now all we need to do is give it a keystroke shortcut–and we're going to skip that silly legacy F-assignment step in the actions palette completely.
Top of screen Program menu lists: Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts>WINDOW POPS OPEN.
In KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS AND MENUS WINDOW:
DROPDOWN BOX: Shortcuts for: > PANEL menus
(list below updates to show Panel menus items. Second item should be "actions")
>Click triangle to expand Actions to sub-items.
>Scroll Down to "Shiny and Pretty" action.
>Give it a Keystroke shortcut (1 or several keys)
>If there is no conflict, the keystroke shortcut is applied.
>If there is a conflict with an existing keystroke command, follow the warnings to either try a different combo, or swap the keystroke command and go to the conflict to reassign, or unassign.)
Repeat until you've got all your actions Keystroked...
>Save Changes.
There are a TON of keystroke shortcuts, and there are ones that you will probably never use, so don't panic about conflicts–just find ones you hardly ever use, whatever they may be. I personally have assigned CMD+PERIOD and CMD+SLASH as 8 and 16-bit dropdowns for HDRI workflows. I never use Help, and I'll use Escape or the on-timeline "stop" button if I need to kill an operation, so this makes sense to me. If you almost never do CMYK or channel work, swap these (you get the idea...)
(And by no means should anyone ever use the above advice to prank a fellow photographer by remapping Undo or Redo to silly, silly actions...unless you're willing to share video of it...) |

->> Gary,
I ran into the same issue. The solution is to turn the F-keys into standard F-keys and not the Apple-suggested shortcuts.
Open System Preferences, click on Keyboard, then check the box that says "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."
Then you can continue to use your normal actions assigned to them. If you want to use the screen brightness, volume, etc functions, just hold the FN key in the bottom left and it'll use the default functions.
Hope that helps. |

->> It turns out that "FunctionFlip" requires that you uncheck the box to use all function keys as standard...
Today I bought a full function USB keyboard and scroll wheel mouse combo to replace the wireless mouse/keyboard that came with the MAC. Things are working much better now that I have physically separated cursor, home/end and numeric keypad keys. Anyone want to buy a barely used wireless mouse and keyboard for your MAC?
