MacBook Pro to high res anti-glare or not

| ->> That is my question. I am purchasing a new Macbook pro 15". Does anyone have an opinion on the glossy screen Vs the anti-glare hi-res screen? I am leaning towards the anti-glare version. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. |

| ->> The anti glare is not as tough as the glare version. I do not have trouble with the glare version some ddo. |

| ->> It really depends on where you are going to be using it. I have not had an issue with my Hi-res glossy version yet but I can definitely see where it might help. |

->> I have the anti-glare version and the screen is so far un-marked. The old MacBook Pro used to suffer from the keypad marking the screen when shut down but they seem to have corrected that on the current versions. Mine is a year old.
If you do any work outdoors where there is stray light, the anti-glare is very useful and I find the high resolution to be useful too. On a job a couple of weeks ago I was the only one with the anti-glare screen and I was the only one not having to continually adjust viewing angles to avoid reflections.
I have an iMac with a glossy screen that I use at home in subdued light quite happily and so I am not against the shiny screens at all. For location stuff I am glad that I spent the extra but I am also considering getting an 11" MBA which will be glossy so it is nowhere near being a deal breaker. |

| ->> Try them both in a store under harsh lighting and you'll more than likely want the anti-glare screen. |

| ->> Michael, I spent the extra money for the anti-glare screen and love it. I often transmit my images from location and that includes outdoors. Outdoors, the non-glare screen really makes a difference. In doors, not as noticeable unless you have bright lights over head. |

| ->> I just bought at 15" MBP as well and got the anti-glare version mainly for the reason that I use it while traveling a lot, sometimes editing in cars or on location. I had a glossy screen on my Dell that I replaced and using it where there was any type of light reflecting on it got old quick. Its the type of thing where 90% of the time you may not need the anit-glare, but the 10% of the time you do it'll be worth the extra $50 over the high res glossy. |

| ->> Thanks to everybody for your insight and suggestions. My thoughts regarding the anti-glare matte screen Vs glossy or not at all, is not money driven, although its always a consideration. I actually just want to make an educated decision and do it once. My Macbook from (2006) is not anti glare and it has been fine, unless in sunlight. Guess I just wanted to make sure there weren't reasons to stay away from it. I think I won't really go wrong with a MBP regardless of which one I choose. Most likely going, hi-res matte anti-glare. Again, thank you all for helping me. |

| ->> Mark, I never would have considered that the keys might mark the screen. That's interesting and probably frustrating. Was there a way to wipe the marks off at least, or was it permanent? Do you think using anti-glare outdoors in major sunlight negates the need for a hoodman or visor? Yes, I don' think this is a deal breaker either way. I will appreciate that I have a new one. Like Jason said, the times that I need it, I'll be happy I have it. That's my thinking too. Thanks. |

->> Don't have Mac, but I have anti-glare screen on my laptop. Also had it on the last one. Both have had the same problem with the keys making marks in the screen.
But I use my laptop very much outdoors, so I would never buy with glossy screen. |

->> I had Apple give me a replacement uni-body MacBook Pro since the logic board of my older MacBook Pro (non uni-body) kept dying for various reasons and I was under AppleCare. They sent me a new uni-body glossy screen MBP.
I bought an anti-glare screen protector for it on ebay that uses static cling to hold it on. So I guess I have the benefit of having a screen that's now protected, yes it has keyboard marks from when I close the lid, plus anti-glare.
Note that there is a slight moire type effect to the screen since the textured anti-glare surface reacts to the pixels of the LCD. I have the standard res screen. It makes the screen 'shimmer' slightly which is kind of annoying but I've pretty much gotten used to it.
I still think it's better than just going glossy. I live in Hawaii, we've got a lot of sunlight to reflect off glossy screens. |

->> Typically the key marks on a matte screen of a Mac laptop are body oil from the fingers.
Try wiping your keyboard with a paper towel wetted with a window cleaner such as Windex, intended to clean oil smudges. I also clean my screen in the same manner. I've done so for years. I wipe lightly and haven't yet damaged a screen.
When I close my laptop I use the sheet of foam that was delivered with the laptop between the screen and keys. I have also used a plain paper towel cut to fit. The idea is to separate the screen and keys.
My own 22 cents, I prefer the matte screen for the MBP. Last year my daughter got a 13" MBP for which the matte screen wasn't an option. We got her the matte applique' for her screen which she put on the day it arrived and hasn't yet removed it. To me it looks like a matte screen. |

| ->> anti-glare or matte. all it will take is one day of working outside...the headache you get from trying to see the images on a glossy screen will be worth the money. ask the guys who all had glossy screens at the ACC baseball tourney....they were in misery. |

| ->> Chuck, with the anti- glare would I be able to bypass using a shade or hoodman in direct sunlight, such as a baseball game? If so, then it would be worth its weight.... and the money too. |

| ->> If you want to protect your screen from keyboard marks (and Steve is correct about it being from the oil/dirt on your fingertips), just pick up something like this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/LSP/ |

| ->> Michael, I upgraded my MacBook Pro in April to the High Res Anti-Glare version. This is probably the best laptop I've ever owned. I shoot in a lot of press boxes that for some reason face the sun and this baby was made with this in mind. You can't go wrong with the High Res model. |
