ipad remote desktop apps and image browsing/editing

->> I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts/experience/advice browsing and editing files on a desktop (with PM, LR and Aperture) via an ipad running a remote desktop app.
I'm no expert here, but my main concerns are ipad color accuracy (which according to Rob Galbraith is a non-issue as long as files are sRGB) and the remote desktop app playing nicely (and running at a reasonable speed) with the image browsers and editors.
Are there other issues I should be aware of? Any of you tech guys or ipad fiends been doing this successfully? |

| ->> I recently just picked up a remote app called Splashtop, so far it works really really well with general stuff. I haven't had a chance to really try and edit anything but I will give it a go and let you know. The app was like .99 a couple days ago. |

| ->> If you have a hi speed wi-fi available it is possible, in home test showed extremely quick response, the problem with the app I used LogMeIn is that I couldn't crop, I could caption and ftp but the mouse ability in the program didn't allow me to crop in photo mechanic. Worth testing out further. I have used it in a pinch to access files I was away from the office. |

->> If you are suggesting using a remote desktop app for editing images on a desktop computer ... I would have to think it would be more than difficult ...
While the actual mechanics of navigating and working an image remotely can be done ... I think color and tonal issues could be a problem if your app is influenced at all by your desktop's custom monitor profile ... and using brushes in PS/Lr could also be problematic ...
I use the iPad app Screens ($19.99 but works extremely well) for my remote use ... does a great job for normal tasks though I never tried actually editing an image ... I did once caption, keyword and FTP four images in Lightroom from my main workstation while out on assignment via the internet ... I didn't make any color or other develop changes as the images had already been processed prior to that ... |

->> I just tried this with a RIM Playbook app. I also wanted to be able to remote access my machine over the internet..... It DID work well however 3 days into thinking that this was the best thing since the D3 sensor I looked at the router log and was floored with the number of attempts to access my server. It didn't appear that anyone got in BUT sooner or later someone would have.
So while color accuracy is important I found security to be a much bigger issue. |

->> My main interest is image browsing and sorting, Butch - Photomechanic type work. Image editing is a secondary concern. Rob Galbraith's ipad articles mention several times that the ipads' native color accuracy is quite good in sRGB(though the white balance runs a little cool). This might largely compensate for the lack of "profilability" in the ipad or the effect of a custom profiled desktop display. "Might" and "do" are very different, obviously; hence my question.
I'd check all this myself, but I'm not an ipad owner (yet?) |

| ->> Eric, your comment is a bit past my IT understanding. Is there something about configuring your server to accept a remote desktop connection that compromises security? Or is it that without need for remote access you simply wouldn't have a server at all? |

->> Last night I tried editing an image on my IPAD just in Lightroom and it was ok. I was having a problem with sliders. I don't have a stylus anymore, but I am sure it would have been easier had I used one to move the sliders. Color looked good. It might work in a pinch but I wouldn't depend on it.
Next I pulled up Photomechanic and was able to easily browse my images and sort. I think if thats all you're looking for, then you shouldn't have a problem. |

| ->> Bradly it's a bit past my understanding too! When I installed the software I had to open a group of 'ports' that allowed the apps to gain access to my computers. Later I discovered that those ports were getting hammered with attempts to login to my server. All I know is that I don't really want to put my files in danger so until I find a more secure solution I pulled the plug. |

->> Eric, that is what firewalls are for ... every router connected to the internet is "hammered" with attempts ... you just either didn't notice until now or they hadn't gotten around to you until recently ....
It's like all the other dangers in life ... many terrible things can happen to me on the highway while driving/riding in a vehicle ... we wear seat belts and practice safe driving habits and carry insurance coverage rather than lock the car in the garage and never venture forth ...
Set up a strong password on your router/server firewall and you should be rather safe to work remotely ... |

->> Bradley, regarding color accuracy of the iPad: Datacolor just released an app for calibrating the iPad screen using their Spyder system. I haven't tried it yet, but will when I get home tonight.

->> Yes, Datacolor has released an app to profile iPads ... only problem is, only their proprietary image viewing app uses the profile ... use any other app and the custom profile is ignored ...
RG covered it here:

Quite frankly, I've owned my iPad for over a year and have personally handled over a dozen different units owned by others ... first thing I do when I see someone else I know with one, I visit my site to compare how the images look on their unit ... I would have to say that the difference in color rendition between units are insignificant ... though I would not use the iPad for extremely color critical work where exact color matching was necessary ... |
