Mac Book Pro Gone from Airport & more-any fC recommendations

->> Another mac book pro disappeared right under my nose. IF you see a mac boook pro up for a bargain soon please let me know as it could be mine. It's just a year old and has all the regular pj programs on it. The worse is that my backup drive was with it and all my cf cards.
this all happened in the red carpet room at the Chicago airport where I was passing through. I felt safe in the red carpet room and let my guard down while I laid my bundle of items at the foot of a chair in order to grab a plate of cheese and crackers. I didn't even notice til I went to pull my laptop out that the whole bag was gone. They didnt' get the other bag with my cameras in it at least. Although it would be easier to replace my cameras than my back up drive.

I am now looking for new flash cards. The last ones I owned were Lexar's pro 16 G 300x and 400x. I've read some posts about lexar having a bad batch out so am relunctant to buy their brand right now. Any one have non problem cards they are using and what about the 32 G how are they working out?

->> I recently found out about Prey Project and installed it on my mac. Free tracking should it get stolen. Whenever the machine connects to the internet, it checks in to see if it's been tagged as stolen. If it has, it will activate the iSight, snap a picture of the person using it, take a screenshot, and also find its geographical location and report home. Optionally it can lock the computer or wipe sensitive data. Check it out at www.preyproject.com . Best of luck with your recovery!

->> They did not have security cameras in the red room much to my surprise as well. next computer preyproject for sure. Although I could not possibly have it taken again -- could I? All my images from the Congo were on my backup drive. I do have most of them on Cd's but not edited or anything.

Any suggestions for a New 500 GB HD 7200 rpm? I was going to order LaCie but the customer reviews on it are terrible. Many people had it crash after only a year.

->> Sherrlyn,
Sorry to hear about the stolen computer and drive. At least you do have some backups! Preyproject sounds like something worth looking into.

I am a PC person, and use a Guardian Maximus from Other World Computing, which really specializes in Mac products. I have read good thing about them here and on other sites, which prompted my purchase. They have both portable and desk-top external drives. You can check them out at

Good luck!

Ron

->> Hey Sherrlyn, sorry to hear about your troubles. I have a had a lot of trouble recently with LaCie, and their customer service is poor, I don't think I'll shop with them again.

I have a bunch of Macsales enclosures and they have been nothing but stellar. They are currently offering a sale on a 500GB 7200 RPM HD with Firewire 800 for $137. It sounds like a great deal.

that totally stinks, especially since it seems it was "one of our own" who took your property.
I have 17 LaCie externals and (knock on wood) I have never had a problem

->> thanks for those recommendations. I loooked at all the reviews and the one getting the best is Other World Computing. I've always used La Cie but reading the latest reveiws it looks like they have fallen down in their customer service and quality. I'll check out macsales. I had not looked there.

yes, it is such a drag and then I can't help but wondering who has all the photos from the Congo, Iraq and of course personal stuff including some boudoir shoots. I still have hope that their concious will get the better of them and I'll get a phone call.

I keep thinking how it feels to lose everything in a flood or tornado and that I'm actually very fortunate.
Love you guys. thanks for the support. It sure helps to hear from others.

->> So there are 3 -- undercover for mac, Preyproject and lojack. Sounds like all 3 are worth looking at. Never again is anyone going to get my computer! My next computer I am going to put on all 3.

Speaking of security don't believe those who say not to watemark your photos. Do it! Of course you want your photos online but you don't want them stolen.
ONe of my photos is presently on an international site and there is nothing I can do about it. At least if I had had a watermark on it, my credit would be there. I watermark half the time but may start watermarking everything that goes online.

Hey Jim I was at DMN in 2001 when the towers blew up. Were you around then?

if you didn't authorize the usage, there is always something you can do about it.

->> Sherrlyn - sorry to hear about the theft. You would think the club rooms would be secure, but thieves are thieves... and anyone can buy a one day pass for $25. That just sucks that you got ripped off.

I just ordered my second 1TB OWC external drive. So far the units have been totally trouble free. I bought the OWCs based on a thread on here a while back.

->> Something that is useful for "worst case" backups is using something online.

I use Dropbox for this when I travel to make a quick "worst case" backup from the hotel before I hit the road. Usually time and size prohibit making a full backup of a shoot, so I'll go through with photomechanic quickly and pick out key selects, zip those up, and throw them into dropbox. Let the computer grind away overnight on the hotel internet connection and then at least I have SOMETHING if both the laptop and the backup drive disappear.

I use Dropbox because it's really easy and convenient to set up on multiple machines. It may be a bit slow but it works really well. For obvious reasons just make sure you don't store your password on your laptop - prompt for password each time.

If you already have a photoshelter account you could do the same thing with it and FTP or their uploader. But I've found Dropbox is usually more reliable when you have to let it run for hours.

Really, really sorry to hear about this. I'm sure there are a thousand things you're now thinking you could have done differently. When I travel, I always use a couple of carabiners to keep the laptop and camera bags clipped to everything else to help prevent the whole bag snatch and grab. Won't prevent a stealthy through-the-zipper attack or someone with a knife cutting a strap, but I'm hoping that I'd catch that.
