Movie Set Photos

->> This summer there are major movies being filmed in Cleveland (The Avengers) and Pittsburgh (The Dark Knight Rises) both about 90 minuets from where I live.

Im not saying i want to stoop to the level of a paparazzi photographer. Im looking to see if there is a way to be around to get shots of the filming.

If anyone has ever been somewhere and have taken some shots of the filming I would love to hear how and what you did to be able to shoot doing that time. Im hoping someone know what the process or even if it is at all possible.

Thanks Guys!

->> Hey David,

We've had many movies shot here in Detroit over the past few years. In fact 70% of Avengers and Dark Knight were suppose to be shot here in Michigan this year until the Governor drastically reduced the tax brakes for movie companies to film in the state.

Anyway....being a huge movie fan and how they shoot feature films I've been near sets for Transformers and others. My advice to you is to

1. Blend in with the crowd with their point and shoot cameras. Don't set yourself apart because security usually RSIG Security (they were red jackets) are really nasty with those folks looking to climb fences etc. If you have long glass and are nice to folks you're cool.

2. Look for strange small yellow signs around the downtown areas with black lettering and arrows. Those sings they cast and crew were to go for shooting and 9 times out of 10 you'll find a pack of movie fans nearby and will give you the scoop about what is going on.

3. Check out this site On Location Vacations.
http://www.onlocationvacations.com/

It's a great site that has up to the minute news about what movies are being shot and what streets or locations.

One day after work I swung downtown and just happen to be there when lots of Transformers cars and trucks were being driven around downtown Detroit. Took out my Flip camera and shot some as my son is huge Transformers fan. Here is the short video from that

Have fun! :-)

->> Forgot to mention that lots of times movie sets have lots of plastic wrappings around fences etc to block views but they know people will still want to shoot.

I was told that sometimes they leave areas open to shoot as they know people will shoot and post on facebook, twitter etc of the movie set creating tons of buzz. Here's some stuff from Transformers that I shot.

I'm amazing at the amount of gear, lighting and expense they go through, pretty cool watching them work.

->> First as a HUGE Transformers fan the video and pics are amazing! I can be calm on the sidelines of an NFL game but if Optimus Prime was to drive past me I dont think I would.

And if im walking around with a 300 2.8 will they have me leave or delete what I would have on my card? Im just worried about being given a hard time.

->> LOL!! Trust me man I want to race home and grab my 11 year old son to watch all those cars and trucks in downtown with me but I knew if I did I'd miss out on lots of stuff :-)

I walked around with a 300 and a 80-200 near the set a few times and they didn't do a thing. I was just careful not to be "nuts" like some people were trying to shoot through little holes in the fencing, etc.

For the movies you're talking about it all just depends on security and the orders they are given by the director or the producers. I've heard Christopher Nolan can be a real control freak with public crowds but like I said that website will tip you off on what is being shot and where.

Good luck

->> Yeah. The last thing I would want to appear to be is a fanboy from comic-con.

Its just one of those things that who knows when the next time it will come around and I would like to see if I can get some stuff to use for myself sell to someone or post somewhere.

It just is a different world than showing up at the media check-in 4 hours before kick off.

Where you were around the Transformers set did you have on anything saying media or what not?

->> Don't forget that your rights on public sidewalks and private property are dramatically different. Furthermore, filming permits may give additional rights to the productions over typically "public" areas like roads, sidewalks, etc. when those areas have access control limiting the public presence.

->> Here's an idea.

Let's say there's a movie shooting at night and they're adamant about not letting photographers take any pictures to such an extent that they position big people to block your view (public street, blah, blah, blah).

Wait until you hear "Action!" and then you and your fellow photogs start popping off flashes. Something set to 1/32nd power should be good enough. The director will yell, "Cut! What the f**k was that?"

This might happen, oh, another two times before an assistant comes over to say something like, "You're killing us here!" To which you reply, "Get these guys out of our way and let us shoot when you're NOT filming and we'll stop."

Big guys move, no more problems.

It worked with a Scorsese picture in Manhattan many years ago...

->> Jim,
several years ago they were filming the very last episode for the Sex and The City TV series. There were probably about 50 photographers there plus all the fans (when they filmed the movie last year, they said over 10,000 people were on the sidewalks watching). They kept trying to block everyone and even put up a huge black tarp to block everyone. One photographer told everyone to pop their flashes and start shouting when they yelled action. They finally asked everyone what they wanted and they were told "give us a shot., set up a scene for us and we will leave" They did a run thru of the scene just for the photographers, they shot, and then left.

Local 600. The production is likely unionized - including the Photographers. Working on a major production requires a lot of knowledge and experience.

Hogwash. They play nice, photogs play nice. Otherwise, screw 'em.

It's a war out there.
