->> After going last year I came back so inspired and saw a massive change for the good in how I do my photography and in the images I create. SSA VII was such an incredible experience and I'm applying to go back again for SSA VIII.
I would absolutely recommend it for all of you who haven't been before and I can't wait to go again!

->> Bert is not exaggerating when he calls these things THE coolest sports photography event of the year.
For those who are thinking about attending, but have doubts:
Don't gripe about the cost of the hotel, of traveling to the workshop (and for non-students, of attending). Like Rafael said, the workshop really is a great deal compared to many other workshops.
Don't gripe about the fact that it's not in your backyard. There are many very good reasons the workshop is in SoCal; without the great relationships that Bert, Matt, and Co. have formed the kind of access that you are allowed at these workshops would not be possible. Hey, if Harry Engels can hop across the pond to attend SSA, anything is possible.
Besides, where would you rather hang out with other photographers? Somewhere close to home, or Orange County in sunny Southern California?
Yes, it still is a significant amount of money, but in the long run the money you spend on the workshop will be worth it. I strongly recommend doing everything in your power to put together the money to attend at least one SSA.
What can you get for the cost of SSA? A D300 or equivalent? If you wake up early to get a good spot in line for loaner equipment, you can borrow that camera or lens that you chose to put off buying from Nikon. The lessons you'll take home from SSA will do much more for you than a new 16-35mm.
You won't regret it. If you've got the gumption to scrape together the money despite financial adversity, you will put in enough to the workshop to make it worth your while.
I've been to 2 SSAs, and the recent SSA Lighting Luau. If I can maneuver some pending family obligations around this coming workshop in the fall, I'll be applying to attend this one as well. I've learned so much each time, and sooner or later I'll have this whole photography thing figured out to some extent... ;-) |

->> I've received numerous emails about how many spots there are in this workshop...
SSA VIII will be significantly smaller than the previous workshops. This is especially the case with the student spots that are tuition - free (thank you Nikon!).
We will begin sending out confirmation notices at the end of this week for those that have been accepted into this workshop.
Once all of the spots are filled, we will begin a waiting list.

The Sports Shooter Academy has truly become international. Daniel is one of several applicants from outside the U.S. --- we have applications from students or photographers from Italy, several from Canada and Singapore.
We are still accepting applications, so if you want to attend THE coolest sports photography event of the year, I suggest submitting your app sooner rather than later.

Will Schneekloth, Photographer

Piscataway | NJ | USA | Posted: 7:37 PM on 07.07.11 |
->> David - you can still borrow Nikon gear even if you're a Canon shooter regularly - the only disadvantage is you're limited to your personal gear or any Canon rental gear you might bring. Nikon brings a full flight of their telephoto lenses and professional bodies, so if you don't have a telephoto or super-wide or something it'll be nice to borrow some of their's. The learning curve isn't too steep, just remember that everything (almost literally everything) is backwards from zoom to focus rings and on-camera controls.
You 100% need a laptop. There are no computers provided and you'll need to edit and process your images for nightly critiques, which is where a lot of the real learning comes from IMO.
Booked up the flight, hotel and rental car in the past couple of days. Can't wait! |

I am planning on bringing a packed Airport Security bag with three bodies, lenses, flashes, remotes, etc. I also want to bring my 400 2.8 in it's big case. I am also thinking I should bring some clothes for the week. How would you pack and what would you send where? |

->> John,
This would be a great question to post in the Google Group for the workshop. Almost every single person attending the workshop will be traveling with their equipment and you can get suggestion from them or at least bounce some ideas around. Depending on what suggestions you have received so far.
You can ship to the hotel, or there are at least 2 FedEx Office Centers with in 2 miles that you can ship Express Air or Ground to, and have them hold it for pick up. |

- LiveBooks has agreed to become a corporate supporter of the SSA.
- We have added LA Times award-winning staff photographer Wally Skalij to our lineup of instructors.

All I can say is that they, along with Matt Brown and the rest of the staff have planned a GREAT event and I'm psyched to be part of it.
Also saw S.I.'s John McDonough, and he's equally excited to join the faculty as well.
Those of you who have taken the initiative to move your careers forward by attending will not be disappointed.
See you all next month! |
