Are the new Canon TCs lots better than the series IIs?

->> I'm considering the new 1.4X series III, but would likely use it with only one of the new series II lenses (70-200 f/2.8) and mostly would use it with an older, non-IS 300 f/2.8.

In those circumstances, is it worth replacing my 1.4X II and/or my 2X II?

I asked the same question to a CPS rep a while back (before the new T.C.s were released) and he thought the series III converters would pair best with the version two lenses that are currently out, like your 70-200 VII, and the new long glass that has yet to be released.

It seems like newer should be better, but I think it depends on your complete kit.

I've learned this lesson the hard way several times recently: Older series glass was designed to work with older series bodies. New glass is designed to work with the current bodies.

Mixing and matching old and new series gear can work, but you may experience growing pains and get to know the folks at CPS repairs better before you fully know the answer.

Case in point: My 70-200 VII lens makes incredibly sharp frames on my Mark IV and 5dMKII but is not working as well with my MKIIn. I'm pretty sure a trip for the two to CPS is in order so that the old body can be tweaked to work with the new lens.

->> I, like you, resorted to the Message Board for reviews of a lens likely used by our community. In my case it was the new Nikon TC-20e iii, after I found not one entry in our Equpment Profiles page for it. In fact, it appears there have been only about a dozen comments submitted to Equipment Profiles for any lens or camera since January 2011.

We might as well trash that page.

->> I was thinking about upgrading as well to extend the reach
of my 70-200 f2.8 IS II. After seeing a lot of posts on
various photography forums with comparisons of the II vs.
the III I've backed off. The difference in IQ with the 1.4x
is very small and most of it occurring on the edges where
only FF sensors would see it. There is more evidence that
the 2x III has more upside but I didn't like either one to
be honest in the photos I saw. Most people still thought
the 100-400 is better if you need the reach.

I did not see much testing on the big telephotos only people
trying the new TC's with the new 70-200.

->> I've used the new 1.4x with the new 70-200 and an older 300 2.8 and its slightly better than the prior version (faster to acquire focus and sharper images). But the difference is minor, so don't expect miracles. The 400 2.8 is too heavy to hand hold so I frequently use the 300 2.8 with 1.4x combo.
