| ->> The Olympus LS-11 is a really good audio recorder. If you don't absolutely have to have the latest/greatest, the earlier model LS-10 is also excellent and can be had a bit cheaper. I have the LS-10 and love it. |

->> Samson's Zoom H2 for $200 is supurb. It has four microphones. You can use the front pair that are 90 degrees to each other for stereo of two people standing next to each other (each on their own channel); the back stereo pair that are 120 degrees to each other for a wider field of 3-4 people; or all four for surround sound. And it fits in your shirt pocket. Plus, with software you can turn the four channel surround sound into Dolby.
It is used by many newspapers, a NPR radio friend of mine and National Geographic according to the dealer who sold them dozens. It has also been recommended in other SS threads about what's the best choice.
I've used one for years and find the sound excellent with either the built in microphones, or using a shotgun plugged into an enternal microphone jack.

->> I just shot a bunch of stuff using the H2. It was $129. The nice thing about it versus some of the cheaper recorders is you can adjust audio levels on the fly as you record. Some cheaper recorders only allow you to set a high or low gain, but not fine tune levels.
I used it with an electrovoice lavalier mic and a audio technica shotgun and so far it has worked great. |

| ->> Plus one for the Zoom H1 - it is such a bargain that I'm still searching for the snag... I guess that there isn't one! |

| ->> Only snag with a Zoom H1 is battery life, seems short, otherwise for the price it's a pretty cool little recorder. |

It takes regular SD cards. |

| ->> Does the zoom H1 allow you to adjust audio levels on the fly? I seem to remember that as being the reason I went with the H2. I know the H2 does, I don't think the H1 does. |

| ->> Josh, About 3500 Zoom HI's were shipped to random retailers that are faulty. I am taking my second one back to Long&McQuade tomorrow as the replacement one is doing the same thing (draining the battery when turned off) Zoom knows about this and will replace the unit until you get a good one hassle free. |

| ->> The Zoom H1 has auto and manual audio levels setting options. I don't recall being able to alter levels whilst actually recording but that may be because I haven't had to do so. For the record, the battery life on mine has been very good indeed - far better than my previous Olympus unit. |
