Preakness questions
Michael McAtee, Photographer
Cherry Hill | NJ | USA | Posted: 5:25 PM on 05.05.11
->> I just received my credentials to cover the Preakness in Baltimore. I was just wondering if anyone with experience shooting this event would care to share any info regarding what it will be like. This is my first time covering a horse race of this caliber. The more information I can gather beforehand would be great.

Shoot me an e-mail with all your questions and I'll be glad to answer.

I didn't do last year's race but photographed 9 or 10 Preaknesses over the dozen years was in DC.

ps. I may be slow to answer with a lot of family commitments but will definitely try to answer all your questions.

->> Michael,

If/while in the infield you need eyes everywhere. Both for unique images plus flying food, cans, people, bikinis (just wanted to see if you were paying attention) and the idiots who will throw anything else I did not mention at you while you're focusing on something else. As a Baltimore native I can tell you there is a ton of atmosphere to shoot such as national rock bands, pro beach volleyball and he races that go all day leading up to the Preakness race itself towards the end of the day.

->> Talk with Scott Serio. He is quite experienced.

I can tell you all about what its like to ride a race horse at speed, but not so much tell you what its like to shoot the Preakness.
