Batteries for original Canon Mark 2.
Joshua Prezant, Photographer

->> I need advice on a place to order good inexpensive batteries for an older original Canon Mark 2
I think they are the Ni-MH Pack NP-E3
12V ( Ni-MH Battery)
From what i remember these batteries did not last that long to begin with so finding used ones would be out of the question.

Thanks in advance
Joshua

->> NP-E3 is the connector, LP-E4 is the battery.

The main difference in between the OEM and third party is the weather sealing, given the mAh ratings are the same.

->> The LP-E4 is for the Mark III and Mark IV. The NP-E3 is the battery for the Mark II and Mark IIN. You might be able to replace the cells yourself if I recall correctly.

->> On the recommendation of a local colleague, I purchased a couple third party NP-E3/LP-E4 batteries from a store on eBay. I swapped the end caps with those from some worn out OEM batteries, and they have worked great so far, and are much, much less expensive than OEM units (around $32 each). Email me through my SS page if you'd like the details.

The original Canon version is available at B&H for $108.00.

A better option is to purchase the Lenmar brand replacements. I have a pair of them that I bought almost two years ago and they are still operating like champs. Shot four cross country meets and 1/2 football games on one battery a few months after I got them. They run around $48 if you search Amazon. You might be able to find them a little cheaper elsewhere.

As recommended above, if you have original Canon batteries swap the end caps. The caps may not fit correctly on Lenmar and other knockoffs and you may have problems seating the battery in the compartment properly.

->> I had that problem When I tried using a third party battery it didn't fit in the compartment. Unfortunately, I did not have a spare end cap to put on it.

Dennis - I was wondering with the third party LP-E4 batteries, do they communicate with the camera. I was under the impression that the reason they are cheaper is because they don't have chip that communicates with the camera.

->> @Stephen - when you say communicate, do you mean transmit information on their charge level? AFAIK, this works fine, although the things hold their charge so well that I've not depleted them noticeably, even after shooting 2 complete NCAA mens basketball games on a single charge. In other words, they have shown full charge at all times.

I did have a slight fitment problem with one of them that was remedied by replacing the end cap. This particular battery wouldn't stay fully seated in one of my MkIIn's. Swapping out the end cap solved this issue.

->> I second Clark's recommendation on the Lenmar battery (Lenmar DMCE3) for the 1D Mark II.

I have several of these, and remembering that they actually do eventually need to be recharged is a bigger challenge than getting them to hold a charge. They just seem to go forever.

->> I've had really good luck with batteries from Delkin

As has been mentioned earlier I'd swap the end caps off of your original canon batteries and put them on the 3rd party battery.

->> It has been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. If this is true then I'm completely and utterly insane.

EVERY time I buy new cameras I end up "cheaping-out" and buying a half dozen aftermarket batteries and allowing myself to believe that *this* time things will be different... they never are.

I ALWAYS end up throwing out the cheapo batteries within a couple of weeks and buying the OEM ones. It's always a waste of time and money.

As far as the MKII batteries (NP-E3) go, I've always found them to hold a very long charge and have actually bought a handful of used ones that worked great. In fact, I can remember shooting on those batteries for a week or more without charging them. If I were looking for cheap NP-E3 batteries I'd post an ad on the classified section here for some used ones long before I'd buy aftermarket ones.

->> As a counter to what Brian said, I have had 4 or 5 of my OEM NP-E3 batteries simply wear out after being used over a significant period of time. These devices will appear take a full charge, but won't hold it very long, and since there's no "hour meter" on the batteries, if you obtain used batteries you'd have no idea how long they would last until you used them. I tired of having to swap out batteries after one quarter of a basketball game, and having to bring my battery charger to every event (not to mention half a dozen dying batteries), so I purchased third party replacements and all has been well since.
