Something loose inside CF card

->> (disclaimer: I looked for a "CF Card" category in equipment Q&A)
One of my CF cards has a very noticeable rattle inside it. Like one of those itty bitty circuit board things has come unattached to whatever it's supposed to be attached to.
Still works fine, but anyone else out there had this happen? Should I stop using it? Is something going to become disconnected and make the ones and zeros unretrievable? |

| ->> As relatively cheap as CF's are - why risk it? |

| ->> My 16 gig Sandisk cards rattle - I stopped using them and yes they still worked at the time they were put away. Only cards I've ever had that rattle. The 2 gig, 4 gig and 8 gig Sandisk ones I have don't rattle. I wouldn't risk using the rattling cards if I were you. |

->> Sorry, should have mentioned it is a Sandisk 16GB card. The newer "Extreme" version. I have two older "Extreme III" 16GB cards that I've had for a while and they don't rattle. I remember when CF cards were $1 per MEGA-byte, so, yeah, relatively speaking $100-ish dollars for 16,000 megabytes is cheap, but it's still expensive enough to cross my grumpy threshold if I have to dispose of it.
Further googling found plenty of mentions of 16GB Extreme cards rattling in reviews on Amazon and whatnot but no one (so far) has mentioned any data loss as a result. Clearly Sandisk has a quality control issue with the 16GB Extreme but is it simply a fit-and-finish nuisance or is it more serious...? I suppose the only way to find out is the hard way, huh? |

->> I just shook my SanDisk Extreme 16 GB CF card next to my ear and heard and felt nothing, so unfortunately I cannot corroborate any rattling at this time.
After reading this thread I know I won't be able to help myself and will have to shake every card I own before I use them next just to see if any of them rattle.
For Matt and others who have rattling cards, perhaps talking to SanDisk directly might be your best bet? |

| ->> SanDisk cards come with a limited lifetime warranty. I would check to see if they will replace it for you just to be on the safe side. |

->> Matt, I hear no rattle from my Sandisk 8GB or 16GB Extreme (60 MB/s) cards.
The Extreme line has a dedicated tech support number and a "Lifetime" warranty, you could always just give them a call: 1-866-270-5532 |

->> FWIW, I contacted Sandisk and they were surprisingly quick about getting me an RMA and they are going to exchange the card. Also, for anyone else with the rattling card issue they told me this:
"The rattling sound that you hear does not indicate any problem with the card and you may rest assured that there is no increased chance of failure on this product. The actual NAND chips are soldered securely to the PCB. The rattling that you hear is when the PCB moves slightly within the case. It is normal and does not affect the reliability of the card."
Wouldn't call it normal, but at any rate, it's the first time I've needed customer service from them and I am impressed. |
