Where do you get your Inspiration?
Mark Sutton, Photographer
Herndon | VA | USA | Posted: 11:25 PM on 04.13.11
->> I just finished watching "Inspiration: The Pros' Secrets to Finding and Keeping It" webinar and I'm always asked "Where do I get my Inspiration?" Since I turned fully to photographing sports it depends on what I'm shooting, but Walter Iooss, Brad Mangin, Sports Illustrated and a good Wedding Book inspire me. Since baseball is my favorite sport, I look at EVERYTHING Brad does. His shots are breath taking. I like to look at good weeding books, because of their attention to detail in telling the whole story through their lenses.

So I ask, "Where do you get your Inspiration?"

->> Honestly, I like to listen to athletes on ESPN, no joke. It's always a good learning experience to hear, first-person, their thoughts on their win or loss. One can learn a lot about winning and managing loss from an athlete's perspective.

I also like to read about prominent figures in history that made a significant impact on mankind.

My personal fave is Thomas Edison. We forget to realize that he failed repeatedly before creating the first usable storage battery.

With each loss you are just that much closer to success.

It didn't disappoint.

->> Mark, your question on inspiration, intrigues, ignites and delves below the surface speaking to essence, emotion and energy.

I believe we all long to connect, communicate and be heard. And as photogrpahers we are blessed with the gift of voicing to our viewers, varied virtual viewfinder visions, via visualization.

Robert, I'll save you the trouble "Vhat!!!?"

->> Inspiration comes in many forms, but what I look at a lot is a children's photographer Patrica McLean. Great stuff by this extraordinary photographer.
Brad Mangin is my favorite sports photographer. Mark Rebilas is a very close second. I love the different methods Mark uses to get The Shot and get it right.
My biggest influence is by far my daughter Nicole, a young talented photographer with a bright future ahead of her.

->> My biggest inspiration came the day my first son was born. Now that I'm a father of two young boys, it continues to inspire me every day.

Maybe I'm confusing inspiration to succeed with a fear of failure. Because my family depends on me, professional failure (and therefore photographic failure) is NOT an option.
