->> Hi all,
i've seen the vacation topic to travel light. but what i might think is interesting is asking everybody what you favorite selection of gear is for a day shooting sports. of course this may vary on the sports your shooting. i would like to kick off with my set.
2x 1d mark III bodies (1 with sunsniper strap)
Canon 16-35 f2.8 Mark II
Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS Mark II
Canon 400 f2.8 non-is Mark II
Canon 1.4x extender (only when shooting outdoor and daytime)
Canon 580EX Flash
Small stuff: 3x 16gb cards and 2x 8gb cards (CF), Flash cord for off-camera flash and stuff like that.
This all fits in my Peli 1510 case with devider set.
I shoot basketball, fieldhockey, soccer, skiing, baseball, tennis and volleyball with this set. Yes i also try to use the 400 for basketball and volleyball when the size of the venue allows it. |

| ->> Do you want gear list that you actually carry with you (say out onto the field) or what you would load into the car? I probably always bring stuff that I know most likely won't get out of the car. In addition to your general list I would have pretty much the same except for adding a 15mm fisheye. |

| ->> Don't forget: rain gear (no matter what the forecast or even if your shooting inside, that gear ain't gonna magically transport itself back to the car), sunscreen (no matter what the season), water, cliff bars (or some other packable non-perishable food), towel(s), change of clothes/shoes, right-angle finder, rosters/team info, reading material and road map (GPS can break). |

| ->> Based on that I'd also have a 300/2.8. Probably my WA would be the 24-70 instead of the 16-35 (Nikon version is f/4 so that can be limiting). Bodies (Nikon) would be D3s and D700. Outdoor season ALWAYS have Hydrophobia for the long glass regardless of the weather forecast. |

Already got your address.
be safe people, posting a list of all your gear and what gear you take with you is not always the smartest move on a public forum. |

->> Except photogear:
- Protecting for the rain, you will never know. It's not that I'm afraid for my gear, but I don't like to get wet myself. And offcourse, it is Holland where I live. It looks like we invented rain :)
- During winter, clothing. Gloves, hat, snowboard-trousers, extra pair of socks. I'm a guy who is always cold.
- Knee-pads when shooting indoors
- A isolation-mat when shooting curling-practice (for lying flat on the ice)
- Earplugs. When shooting motorsports. I have two ears, I like to use them my entire life. I have earplugs from a molded type. Cost € 100,- worth every euro.
- A bottle for drinking
- Sunprotection, to prevent sunburn |

->> Does anybody wear a helmet for baseball, softball, lacrosse or any other sport involving fast moving, hard objects? I was hit on the side of the head a few days ago by a screaming foul ball at a girls HS softball game. I lost my vision for about a minute and suffered a concussion. I'm seriously considering buying a helmet!
Anybody else wearing one? |

I started considering the same thing after a foul ball missed my head by an inch last Saturday. |

->> Odd things I carry are as follows;
Black and Decker thingy to plug into my cig lighter for a outlet to plug in my laptop or battery charger. Another thingy for traction to put on my boots in case I'm in deep snow or ice. Plenty of rain gear for me and my gear. Extra blanket in the trunk. Laptop board for my laptop in case I transmit from the car. Small stool for baseball and softball and knee pads. Extra windshield wipers. I have a hard hat in the trunk in case I have to go to a construction site. A air pump that I can plug into my cig lighter in case of a flat tire. Reflective vest for shooting at night on the highway. I think thats it.

->> With all due respect, this is a pretty pointless thread. Props to Robby for having a sense of humor about it.
Many of my favorite sports photos were shot with a 35mm. Nice gear and the ability to use longer lenses helps, but I believe that if you're looking to make your work stand out - it comes down to personal ability to think about your framing and composition, immerse yourself in the sport from a variety of angles, shoot away from the pack and constantly be "switched on."
Anyone can buy a MkIV and a 400mm - knowing how to use that particular tool when appropriate is the important part. Quality gear is important, but I think the best people out there could kick butt with any camera they have. |

| ->> 20d, 70-300mm, and a monopod. Maybe an 18-55 if I'm feeling artsy? Oh, and a teleconverter, Sigma makes a 2.7x so it's like shooting with one of those big lenses. It makes the pictures come out really cute. |

->> I've found my essential sports gear to be:
1. Shorts.
2. Breath mints.
3. knee pads (I prefer the Bucket Boss #93090).
4. Bottled water.
5. Some device / bag / contraption to carry #4.
6. iPod / iPhone + ear buds to listen to music so I won't hear GWC asking me if I can see Pluto with "that lens."
7. Obnoxiously colored shirt so my wife can spot me on the sideline / baseline more readily. Bonus: If I get run over by a large athlete, the commentator might mention me, e.g. "That sure is an ugly shirt that photographer is wearing, Bob...Maybe that's why Marion Barber ran him over."
And some camera stuff would be good, too..lenses, camera body, memory card. What not.
Oh, and don't forget the sunscreen! |
