BEST IMAGE BROWSER

->> I am going through the process of updating some software and wondered what image browser is the most popular. The only requirements I have are that it is Jaguar compatible, and that it will browse Canon RAW files. I've been using Photo Mechanic to date, but just wondered if there was anything that the SportsShooter audience liked better.
Thanks!!! |

->> I'm using photo mechanic and like the workflow it provides me. My one complaint or should I say a wish for the next update is for the program to build a preview of a raw image when you click on the iris icon. Right now it pixelates because it doesn't/can't build a thumbnail from the large image. Hopefully they are working on a way to make that happen. I've also used the image browser within Photoshop 7.0 with success. I do also wish I could see a larger photo without having to open in Photoshop.
Currently my work around has me shooting raw + jpeg. The jpeg image allows me to check the technical aspects of the photo like focus, exposure and composition and then I use the raw image to import to Photoshop. I also use and LOVE the versatility that the Adobe Raw plug-in gives me when importing raw photos. You can “fix” white balance screw-ups as well as the ability to throttle exposure, contrast, brightness settings too. If you can wait until the next update of Photoshop I would because the raw plug-in will be rolled into the update. Could save you a hundred bucks. |

->> My workflow is the same as Michael's.
I shoot RAW+JPEG with JPEG Small compression set to give me tiny 250kB files. The JPEGs are for previewing focus since, as Michael mentioned, the 1D RAW previews stink in Photo Mechanic. It's not so bad since the tiny JPEG files are negligibly small compared to the RAW and take up just ~10% of the memory card.
I tag and caption in PM, then edit straight into Adobe Camera Raw.
Rarely is there a need for big batch jobs for me since I usually just pull a dozen or two images from an assignment, game, etc., which is a manageable number to RAW edit individually. |

Brilliant minds think alike……….SCARY HUH!
Wally, I'm curious about whatever browser works best with Raw images . Hopefully someone who uses the Breeze will chime in here.

| ->> I use BREEZEBROWSER and it works pretty well for me. But I have not used some of the others mentioned, and wondered how others rate it in comparison. I also use the Adobe Raw converter, but it seems like BREEZEBROWSER works faster than ARC. ARC has the ability to extrapolate to a larger file, which BB does not; but apart from that, BB works really great. |

->> I usually use PhotoMechanic, sometimes I use the built-in Adobe PS7 File Browser to view thumbnails. And once in a great while I use Nikon View.
The nice thing about Adobe's File Browser is that it properly builds previews images that have been converted to CMYK. So if you have a folder of CMYK images use the PS7 File Browser.
I never use iPhoto. |
