resizing images in a folder containing subfolders
Stew Milne, Photographer

->> So I have a folder, containing sub-folders which then contain images. Is there a program or script that will copy the existing top folder, the subfolders and then resize the images to lo-res?

Right now I am resizing all the images using PM and re-creating the sub-folder system. Very time consuming.

->> I thin you can still use PM with a little acrobatics...

Right click and "Open Folder and Subfolders..."

Then "Save Photos As..."

You can then select the Destination "Save to this folder:"

and use Variables to create the folder structure.

Maybe?

Give it a shot and let me now if it works.

->> Kirk at camerabits suggested that I could use the IPTC data to create the location directory. So in each photo I could put a string of where the image should be copied, then in the "save as" function, use one of the IPTC data fields to look into this string to determine it's location. With this method, I still have to open each of the bottom sub-folders that contains the images though. So, time consuming it is.

Back in the day (15 years ago) when I was learning C++ scripts for computer animation, I know I had a script that did exactly this. My days of programing are over though.

Juerg, I'll see it that works.

->> stew do you have photoshop by any chance?

If so, File->Automate-> Image Processor.

Set the parameters that you need and then click "Run"

There are options for file compression and actions. There is also an option named "keep file structure".

I use this when separating files that I send in versus my full files. I select the main folder named "finals" which come right out of lightroom or something similar. Typically I will break them down into the player. Then do what I prescribed above by choosing the "Finals folder"- Click "Keep folder structure". I choose the action I have set up for my client for sizing specifics (for example- I have an action that sizes to 6x9") then click run. You can choose where the folders will end up and it will take a minute or so.

If you want, I can make a video describing this with my steps.

Hope that helps.

->> @Juerg : unfortunately the faststone software is only for PC. Why do companies do that, when they know that a plethora of photographers use Mac.

Anyone have another software suggestion?

Thanks
