->> Hey Seale I LOVED the timelapse... particularly the way to it shows Armando & Cy working in the background as Litherland comes and hams it up for (and harasses) the camera every 15 minutes or so. Classic!
This may be why I have more frames of Chip taking up space on hard drives than I have of my own child. |

I can't find a reference to it in the message boards, but I probably found it here on SS.com. |

| ->> Wow! I loved the video. Let's see, I count at least 5 assistants, scaffolding, a scrim and lightstands big enough to shade a 747, various choices in softboxes and lights, mondo light stands, on and on... Ahhh, how nice indeed to have unlimited resources... But I doubt seriously anyone else could have gotten the same results even with all this at your disposal. I especially love how he got the clouds to come in at just the right time in just the right way. Great job! But the real disappointment came when I realized that "Evan" was not a mis-print. You know, "Eva"... Oh well... |

->> I second Phil's comments. The concept and the final product is wonderful, but sometimes the unlimited resources of SI seems like overkill at times. This is not to take away from any of the guys that worked on this project. They did a fantastic job.
It reminds me of a game I shot several years back in Greenville, NC. SI had two photogs, two assistants, flew them all in, car rental, food, hotel and one small image was used in the next weeks issue. It just seemed like a waste. |

[I did.] |

->> Just so you all know: The days of unlimited budgets....at any magazine, are long over. Although this was a special shoot and there was some added cost with the plexiglas, and I'm grateful to my awesome photo editor Nate Gordon, and SI for letting us try this - I flew by myself, took mostly my own gear, rented some more there, used a local assistant, got the free help of another buddy who is a local photographer, recruited some grounds crew guys to help us unload, and we sourced everything, from hotel, rental car, plexi, scaffold, etc. from the absolute cheapest sources possible.
My old editor, John Rawlings, gave me some of the best advice I ever heard...which is: "spend our money as if it were your own." ...and I've never forgotten that. If you want to work for any client more than once, it's really good advice to keep in mind. |

->> All the money in the world would not have enabled me to complete this assignment as successfully as Robert. There are reasons why editors like Nate hire him for this kinda stuff. And there are reasons why editors like Nate DO NOT hire me for this kinda stuff.
I got a headache watching the cool video Cy did. I could never handle that pressure.
Bravo Robert. |

->> Amen, Louis...
No one questions SI's priority in getting the best sports photography possible, Hooray on that. Not meaning to cast dispersions on that effort, but what I would give to have just ten percent of what they spend to wallpaper arenas with remote cameras, shooters, strobes, assistants, etc. They have probably cut back on some of the expenditures for sure, but I was reading not long ago how John McDonough shoots a basketball game in SD, then packages up the equipment on PALLETS and ships to SLC for an NBA game up there requiring two days of setup... I'm just agog at the effort! It comes down to this: They have more and better toys than I do and I wanna play too!! I'm thankful for what they do; flipping through the mag every week gives me a standard to work toward. (Now, where can I get some 3-inch Plexiglass?) |

That would be a welcome resource to have for this site. A section similar to the guide on providers of some of the unusual items one might be looking for, that members could update. |

->> Phil- John McDonough could take a HOLGA and make better pictures than you or I with top of the line digital slrs at a Laker game. It aint the toys with these guys. They are the BEST at what they do. Period.
I learned many years ago that there are many people out there who can kick my ass with a camera. And I am cool with that. I do my thing with what I have- and I have fun with it.
It has nothing to do with having access to the toys. There are reasons why guys like Johnny Mac, Beck and others kick ass consistently with lots of toys or no toys. They are really [profanity]ing good at what they do. |

->> Robert, nice job! Also nice job Cy with the video. I couldn't work out from the video how the ball was being fed/pitched to Evan. Looks like it would be awkward since he was so high up to throw him the ball. How did you work through this Robert?
Cheers,
Daniel |

->> Also, what kind of time window did you have with the clouds in the right position? It was challenging to separate Evan from the clouds as his uniform have the same tone. Kudos.
I agree with Brad. To produce that image under those circumstances takes a special photographer. Great job.
Cheers,

->> The other thing I'm curious about is the reflections while shooting up through the Plexiglas. Did the black flagging on the sides of the scaffolding and on ground do the trick? Did you wear all black? Still thinking hands, cam, face would reflect.
It also sounds like you were shooting a light from below through the glass to light Evan's feet. It looks like this would cause some issues with reflection.
Would love to know how this problem was solved.
