An unsolicited, uncompensated plug for...

The guy at my local camera store refers to it as "Flat Stanley."

Got this for my last out-of-the-country photo/video gig. Prior to this, in my quest to keep the gear size and weight to a minimum, I used a tabletop tripod and either found or built something tall and sturdy to put it on when I needed to do video interviews or have steady shots that weren't 3" off the ground.

This tripod changed my life big time. Lightweight...portable...packable. Plus, as an unexpected bonus it even made my handheld shooting steadier. I brace the folded-up 'pod against my chest and subtle moves are a lot smoother with the camera LCD right at eye level. Even walking around the legs act as a counterweight, giving me a sort of 'poor man's steadicam'. Not totally smooth, but much less of the seasick-inducing bounce that my walking shots have without it.

As soon as this project is done I'll link to it.

Even lighter to carry.

->> Oops, I linked to the carbon-fiber version. I actually bought the aluminum version. Half the price of the carbon. Heavier but still the easiest "real" tripod I've ever lugged. Perhaps I should have gushed more about the fold flat-ness. You look at it on paper and think... "Hmmm, that's nice.". But in actual use it's convenience and utility is surprising. Just wanted to tell about my good experience with it for any other multimedia road-warrior types who had the same dilemma I did.
