Mac Intel question

->> I have a 500 GB intel desktop- We don't have that much on it, yet it says we only have 58gb left. Does anyone have any idea how to see what is here that isn't needed. Or...another question. One day our cat duplicated some folders but we saw them on the desktop. If he also duplicated the HD, how can we check?
Thanks for any help (from a total non techy brain!)

->> Debra-
You could download an app like DaisyDisk (http://www.daisydiskapp.com/) and have a visual representation of the stuff on your hard disk...any overly large files should stick out...
Maybe your cat started recording hours of HD video of himself with the built-in camera... :) |

->> thanks Greg,
it says Users: 362.9 GB. I am feeling dumb, but no idea what that is and why so much is in there. Can you explain? |

->> Debra,
The link Patrick provided will be the most helpful of the last three posted; Joint Venture has only been opened up to those purchasing a new machine, and the Genius Bar will only officially provide support for hardware issues, thought if you get a nice genius they'll help you with some software stuff during your 10 minute appointment. (Run on sentence!!!!!!)
The user folder is everything except system files. That means the majority of Applications, Documents, Music, photos etc. will be in your Users folder.
In addition to DasiyDisk you may also want to try XSlimmer which can help you slim down the size of the applications installed.

->> Deb:
-Go into Photoshop and Bridge (and other image viewers) and clear your thumbnail caches.
-Go into your User folders and take a look around at what folders are huge. Depending on your settings, iMovie and/or Final Cut may have cached a copy of every single video clip you've ever touched. It was doing this to me, even though I was working in iMovie off external drives.
-Look in your mail folders for download and sent mail. Even if you've DL'd everything to your desktop, there still may huge chunks of redundant data clogging up your drives.
-Program slimming may save a small slice of your hard drive space, but most of this bloat is probably caches and user data. |

| ->> Debra...What are the primary applications you are running on that computer? They may be responsible for taking up hard disk space. Lightroom, for example, can consume lots of hard disk space with its previews. Another example is if you are running Aperture with managed images, then all of your photos are contained within the Aperture library. |

| ->> Whatever you do, do not go deleting things without knowing exactly what they are first. I would back up your computer before you start spring cleaning. |

->> Patrick...now you tell me :) (joking!)
Jack-how do I clear the thumbnail cache in PS? I can't seem to find those.
Seems the bulk of the issue was with video that was stored in IMovie and failed attempts at Final Cut Express.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. (not sure why someone listed Patrick's first comment as funny, however since it was informative) |

| ->> Both programs: [PROGRAM NAME MENU]> Preferences> (Launches a dialogue box) From the prompt box's left nav > Cache > There you go. |

->> Lightrroom can create some killer cache files in the Adobe Camera Raw folder..
I use a program called WhatSize ( www.whatsizemac.com) ... just point it at your drive and it will tell you where the big files/folders reside.

->> Debra,
If you use iPhoto, it has a separate trash can that must be emptied from within the program. |

| ->> Debra, Kevin is right. I had that problem as well on my MacBook Pro. I have a 4 year machine that only has a 160GB HD. I put a bunch of images into iPhoto to run as a slideshow, but started deleting and never deleted inside iPhoto. Once I deleted what was inside the iPhoto program my HD cleared up. |
