formatting an external HD for MAC
Debra L Rothenberg, Photographer

->> I have a new 2 TB HD (the box says 1TB) that needs to be reformatted for my Intel Mac. Before I call Apple to walk me thru it (again, and no doubt will be on hold for 45 minutes) does anyone have the step by step to do it the correct way? They walked me thru it so fast the last time and I didn't write it down.
Thanks in advance.

->> Open to the Disk Utility application in your Applications > Utilities folder

Select the disk you want to format (should be the brand name of the new disk with the size of the drive)

In the tabs to the right, select Erase
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Put in a name for the drive

Click Erase

->> is that all? I know that works for everything else but I remember the last time I got the new Ext HD, the box said 1TB when it was really a 2tb, and there seemed to be more steps involved.

->> Reminder. If you want the hard drive to be bootable on a Mac with an Intel chip you'll have to make sure that it's partitioned as as GUID drive before installing an operating system. This is not necessary if you're only going to be using it as a data drive.

Use Disk Utility to partition and then format (as Mac OS Extended Journaled) the drive.

->> Debra, It's hard to say exactly what to do, since I don't have the information about the drive. It sounds like the drive has two 1 TB disks in it that form a mirrored RAID. You'll go to Disk Utility and instead of selecting the Erase tab, select the RAID tab.

Select: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
RAID Type: Mirrored RAID Set

Drag the two disk icons into the box and select create.

This should give you a drive that looks to you like a 1 TB disk, but has a backup copy on a separate drive built into the same case. If you're looking for something different, the Apple Support forums have quite a bit of info on this.
