I think it's funny how on the cover art image there, the guy on the far left has what looks like newer Nikon strap with his "old" cameras and the other guys have older, black straps.
Nevertheless, I'll be seeing it. |

->> Looks awesome!!
One thing bugs me: The trailer says it took place in 1995. Seems like the cameras they are using are older, like 1985. In 1995 I was using an F4, an F90 and an old F3 as backup. And my first Nikon: an FM2.
Maybe the story explains why they have the gear they do. |

->> I just hope the accents are right. Leo nailed his Zim/SA accent in Blood Diamond. I know it sounds moronic, but having grown up in SA, there's nothing quite as distracting as a not-quite-right accent in a movie. Maybe I should grab the book instead, that way I don't have to worry about Ryan Phillippe butchering the South Effriken colloquialisms....

->> It looks really good, hopefully it lives up to the trailer. I am sure the producers would have discussed the gear used at the time with the photographers involved, or at least the prop people, but who knows.
On another note, in 1994 I was in grade 10, and the only camera I had ever used was a Yashica MG-1 rangefinder. |

| ->> I have limited optimism. Hollywood has a knack for destroying stories in the name of creating drama ... but the trailer looks like the PJ work was practiced enough by the stars to look legit ... so I'll rush out to see it and then wait for it to have the Top Gun effect on the field of photojournalism :-) |

And about the cameras, I know Ken and Kevin shot with older cameras, not up to date ones. |

->> Greg Marinovich was nice enough to answer a note from me about the questions raised here regarding the film.
He describes the plot as "quite dissimilar" and "the usual movie adaption thing." He also said that he "was on set a lot, but most was on technical as opposed to storyline."
Greg goes on to suggest, as most of you have already done, that reading the book will provide the true story of this inspiring group of photojournalists. |

Having come of age in photojournalism during the times in the book (I graduated from college in 1992) it brought me back to many of the events and images in the news that shaped my passion for visual journalism. |

F4 ugly! Them's fightin' words...
You should have seen the Beseler Topcon I used in the Navy for awhile, now that was an ugly beast. My old F2 wasn't much prettier, but I knew at least that I could swing it like a club if I got stuck in a tight spot. |

Thanks David for the heads up.. |

->> I just finished the movie. Overall, I felt as if it was a good film. I have not had a chance to read the book, but I can see where there would be times that might be over dramatic and pushed a tad. Film wise, I thought it was fairly well done, and I enjoyed it. Really hits home to know that there are fellow photographers putting their life on the line every day in these kind of situations, as well as those of Sudan, Liberia, Egypt, etc. I hope this movie serves as a reminder to those who sick to where we are comfortable, that there are men and women in our line of work who pass away due to this, and I hope we will never forget their sacrifice.
To all those out there, stay safe. |
