Season Project on San Diego State Basketball.
James Gregg, Photographer

->> As you probably know by now, San Diego State is having their best basketball season in history. I've had the privilege to be along for the ride and on Thursday we launched a project on the season including profiles of the Starting 5: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/sports/aztecs/videos/

I came out to join the staff of the San Diego Union-Tribune in August and have been focusing on a lot of video and multimedia. This project was all shot with the 5DmkII and 7D, and I used a combination of external sound with the Zoom H4n and Sennheiser wireless and shotgun mics. I used all kinds of glass from the 16-35 to a 400 with 1.4 TCE, and experimented with tripods, monopods and handheld techniques. It was a lot of fun to work with and struggle with. The access was tough for most of the season and ultimately, I was happy to land the final two interviews just a couple of days before the Aztecs first game of the NCAA tournament. My goal was to humanize each of the players that would take viewers beyond the canned press conference responses and help to give a sense of what makes this team so good. It felt great to complete the set of the Starting Five. I hope you'll check it out!:

->> Nice job James!

I love the interviewing, lighting, sequencing and all the visuals, especially the variety of angles from action during the game! The score for each piece is nice as well and syncing the music to visual pops during some of action was perfect.

I bet this is getting major views on your newspapers website.

Eric

->> Thanks gents! So far the response has been very positive. We have been rotating the players featured in an embedded player on our home page to coordinate with some of the stories being done in between games and to give it a fresh look. As the Aztecs generate more interest in the tournament, hopefully these will get discovered.
Thanks again!
