->> Just heard from a good friend this morning that famed sports photographer Brian Lanker has pancreatic cancer with about two months of life left. He's undergoing hospice care in his Oregon home.

->> I remember staring up at the layout of his Pulitzer Prize winning photo story hanging on the wall of the photo department at the Topeka Capital-Journal (where he worked back in the 70's) - It's still in the exact spot where it was originally hung. The rest of the photo staff and I always enjoyed looking through his archives for motivation. His business card and NPPA ID badge are still stuck to the old bulletin board back in the lab where we presume he pinned them. I've never met the man, but he left a lasting impression through his photos back in Topeka.
Here's a link to Pulitzer winner at the Capital-Journal.

->> My mother died of pancreatic cancer. It is exceptionally nasty stuff. I'm really sorry to hear about this. I can only hope that Brian doesn't suffer. God Bless you Brian..

->> I've never met Brian Lanker in person, but having worked in Topeka like Mike Burley has (above posting), I often would escape back into the library and flip through his fabulous work prints filed during his time at the Capital-Journal. His eye and talent pushed me to strive for his visual elegance. His "I Dream A World" book buckled my knees when it came out and still does today.
This news saddens me so and I echo the sentiment that I hope his hospice care keeps him free from as much pain as possible. |

->> The world lost one of its finest photographers last night when the great Brian Lanker passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. A finer person does not exist. His abilities as a journalist were surpassed only by his even greater talents as a human being. Anyone involved in the photographic community owes his creative talents tremendous respect. The world of photography and journalism has suffered a great loss but more importantly Brian's family and friends have been left with a huge hole in their hearts. Rest in peace Brian.

->> He inspired so many of us. As Damian put it so well, Brian was a finer person than photographer -- and as a visual artist he was one of the best of the best. We are all poorer for his passing.
