Software to Track Equipment?
Steel Brooks, Student/Intern

->> Hey, I work in the equipment checkout room for my university. Currently we just keep track of the equipment with a series of spreadsheets and inventory lists in MS Excel. Is anyone using software that was build for something like this?

A big thing I'd like would be the ability to search for a piece of equipment, say a Nikon D300 Kit, and be able to see how many we have, how many are checked out, and when those are due back, and who has them checked out.

We're not looking for anything super complicated, but I'm just trying to see what other people/schools/anywhere there is group equipment use.

Thanks!

Everything is logged in a computer with individual barcodes for each piece of gear; they can identify what is checked out, what they have available, when equipment is due back and who has it. Best part about it is that you can reserve equipment in advance and know whether or not it will be available when you need it. It seems as though to offer everything you are looking for.

From my experience of always checking out gear, the process was really smooth and efficient.

I graduated a while back and no longer in the area, so I cannot figure out what the software is, but I am sure that you can call the school and ask them to redirect you to checkout (Ventura is probably best option). They are really friendly and probably would not have a problem telling you the software they use.

Hope this helps and good luck,

Devin

->> Chances are you can have your school library dept./IT dept. set up a system using whatever software the library uses for checking out books with barcodes.

Barcodes were put on all easily removable parts on the gear to make sure everything checked out was returned. Students had to sign a sheet inspecting the gear before it was checked out to note any dings or scratches.

+1 to Patrick Fallon's comment. seems like that would probably be the best solution, esp if the school has licences for the software already.
