->> Tonight I'm shooting BB in an older HS gym. I know the lights are of the style that oscillate between pink and green. My question is this: Should I auto white balance or select a specific Kelvin and just go with it?
I shoot raw and batch convert to jpg.
Thanks in advance,
Jon Wright |

->> Jon either WB setting will work OK but neither is great. The lights cycle too fast for auto WB to work.
Check out this earlier thread on the subject:

and from there be sure to click on Guy Rhodes' even earlier thread, which I think is one of the single most informative threads I have ever read on here. |

->> Ultimately, I color-balanced to 3700 K. I shot 2.8 at a 500th of a second at 2,000 ISO, Color-balanced in Photoshop Raw and tweaked the Jpgs just before sizing them for web use. This gym is probably the darkest in our area and I was fairly happy with the results.
Thanks Curtis! |

| ->> 1/500 @ 2.8 @ 2000 ISO -- that's the DARKEST in your area? Count your blessings!!! |

| ->> At 1600 I'm shooting at 250th of a second at F2.8 and am still underexposed by two stops in our gym and I've seen worse. |

->> I usually get two types of white balance in the university's
gym. It doesn't happen often but sometimes I get a yellowish
cast to my photos so I setup a special preset in LR that has
a different color temperature setting. I'll apply the base
basketball preset then quickly go through them and apply the
special preset wherever it needs it. Usually 5-10% need it.
I like a higher shutter speed so I bumped up the ISO to 4000
and am able to get 1/800 at f2.8. A little extra noise looks
better then motion blur of the feet and hands. |
