OT: Strangest Thing You've Taken in Trade for Photos?

->> So I was at a concert of some very good friends of mine who were on tour and I had just come from a photo assignment and was going to snap a few photos of their show (The Silent Comedy from San Diego if you know of them...).
My buddy Josh asked if I could shoot a quick photo of the band with a bottle from one of their new sponsors—a moonshine company from Virginia.
I had my lights in my car and they're good friends, so I did a quick and dirty photo and as I was putting my stuff back in my car, Josh hands me an unopened bottle of their moonshine as a thanks for the photo.
What strange things have you all gotten? |

->> Sometimes I prefer to barter. One time I bartered Christmas card photos with an attorney to handle a couple of speeding tickets in traffic court.
Another time I shot my sister-in-laws wedding for a complete set of tires for my truck. |

For some photos of his work, I received a 3' tall blown glass salt shaker, complete with rock salt inside. It's very cool. |

->> Avgas.
When I was first getting my PPL, I did photos for the FBO to advertise their charter business and pretty pictures for their walls. Got credited in fuel. At that time (1998-99) Avgas was around $2/gal. (Auto gas was under a buck) Took a bit of the sting out of the expense of flying. Geez, wish I could get "stung" for $2/gal Avgas now...It's averaging over $5/gal. |

->> Ironically, I was kidding but after thinking about it, I'm somewhat telling the truth. I've shot three weddings my entire life - mainly as favors. During one of them I was smitten by the Maid of Honor and as it turns out, the bride's mom made it a point to hook us up. I stayed beyond my scheduled time limit, danced the night away with her and we eventually dated for three years, sooo. Yea. Sex. :)
More to your point though, Cincinnati is blessed to be #3 on the list of Fortune 500 companies per capita, so corporate/PR work is bountiful. In an effort to always find a "better way", I got three of my regular clients to agree to issue me a set number of common shares rather than payment and it's been working out hugely in my favor. |

| ->> One of my clients who I have shot for over 25 years pays me in oil for all my vehicles as well as paying me for calendar shoots once a year. If I added up the cost of all the oil I have received over the years and it was quite a number. I like the barter system for some of my clients as this works for them. |

->> Great topic and shows it is not all about $$$ but value...
I traded action photos of three kids over three seasons for a large portion of a 16x24 patio. The patio is done and I am still paying up... two more seasons left Hockey and lacrosse
Worked out for both 100%

->> Just last week I traded a half day shoot for my optometrist for a really kicking new pair of glasses. About $600 in value for really nice Polo frames and super kick ass no scratch, no glare lenses with a two year warranty.
I like the doc, the shoot was fun and it was something I could do on my own (no assistant or stylist and she handled production and models) without putting any money out of pocket.
She was so thrilled (and knows she got a super deal) that I was informed I now have "the hookup" on any glasses I want.
So, add the value of in focus photos to the value of the glasses and I made out pretty well. |

Non-profit client sent my wife and I to El Salvador (the coast) for 7 days to cover a house construction project there. Worked 4 days, wife helped build houses and then we hung in a classic Central American resort for three days. |

| ->> I worked out a deal this week with a cycling gear distributor that wanted to use some of my mountain biking stock on their website. It just so happened that I'm in the market for new mountain bike shoes and several other pieces of gear. They didn't have a large budget for the images they wanted to use, but we worked out a trade, which works out well because bike gear can be expensive. |

->> Hey, all, just a word of warning (sorry to rain on the parade, but it is April 15.) The IRS can consider the value of the bartered items as income. If I help friends move, and they buy pizza and beer that's OK, as long as I'm not a mover, and they don't own a pizza place. If I, as a professional photographer (the occupation I declare on my taxes) trades photo services for goods or services from another business, it could get dicey.

| ->> A friend who creates her own line of jewelry asked me to take some photos of her work. I took the photos and handed off the images fully intending to invoice her later. One week later, I was on assignment and realized I hadn't bought anything for my wife for Valentine's Day. Called up my friend and asked her to put together a custom-made necklace with one of my wife's favorite crystals. I came home to a gift wrapped necklace waiting for me. Found out later, the necklace was worth far more than the invoice I was going to give her. Not only that, she saved my behind. |

->> I shot some photos of a kid doing the Navy SEAL PT Challenge at the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas. He was really going at, this kid. A man approached and said, "Hey, Photographer!" (How did he know my middle name?)
He identified himself as the kid's father and offered me tickets to ANY Texas Rangers baseball games if I'd send him some images. He then added, "Hey, need a credential? I can get you one of those, too." He produced a business card that looked like the real deal, said he was the Customer Relations Director...manager, grand poobah or something.
So, says I, "Sure." I sent him the images. Called him at work to make sure everything was cool. "Yeah, sure. I'll take care of you."
Never heard another frickin' word from him. So the weirdest thing I ever traded for photos? Nothin'. Absolutely nuthin'.
Well, I still have the business card, so I guess I got something out of the deal. |
