| ->> A relatively new website has surfaced, called statsheet.com that provides statistical information on virtually every D-1 basketball and football team, players, coaches and referees in the US. I found 3 images of mine they were using without permission. I notice they post a lot from AP and Getty. Might be worth browsing to make sure they are not stealing from you... |

->> Is there a way to check if a publication is a valid AP member.
I've sent notice to a few websites that were using photos I sent to the AP and they claimed to be members. Somehow I don't think ICANHAVECHEEZEBURGERS.com is a valid AP member, but I'd like to know before I send a bitchy email and potential anger the guys at the AP.
Could be this website is actually paying for the photos. |

| ->> It depends; although they have relationships with Icon, AP and Getty, and I am told they do subscribe and pay on time, let me direct your attention to the page that I have problems with; http://statsheet.com/blog/have-a-photo-of-a-college-basketball-referee They used four shots of mine w/o permission of refs in D-1 BB. Obviously, they have no problem using shots from any and every source. They caption and credit shots only when contractually forced to (by AP and Getty). |

->> Update: Shots have proper credits now, and I assume he's paying for the shots, but if you look at his galleries, there is a link beside every shot allowing you to save the image. Obviously, many folks know how to right-click to save images, but does he have to encourage people to do so with the implicit "permission" to do what anyone wishes with the shot? This guy (CEO Robbie Allen) solicits free pics and establishes processes de facto encouraging people to steal!
He still solicits for free images of officials, and even provides a release form giving him rights as follows: "...GNU Free Documentation License or the Creative Commons Attribution or Attribution/Share-alike licenses, which allow everyone to use, alter, and redistribute your work for any purpose, including commercial use."
If you shot NCAA basketball, football or MLB in any of the major conferences over the last 5 years (and that's a lot of people here), and you fed Getty, Cal Sport Media or Icon, make sure you got paid (and ARE getting paid for ongoing web usage). There are a TON of action images all over the web site. Yes, they are captioned properly indicating he probably did pay for the shots from AP, Getty and other companies, but seeing other areas of this guys web site leads me to believe he plays fast and loose with images and will not hesitate to use free ones when able to do so.
At the very least he should stop providing a link allowing people (and implicitly encouraging them) to steal. By providing a link for download, he is contributing to the pervasive attitude that image stealing is "no big deal". I'm aware that Microsoft does the same thing, but it's gradually becoming less pervasive with them as more people speak out against this type of theft. |
