Video Help Converting Files from H.264/MPEG-4 to HDV?

->> Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
I shot video for a client on a 5DMKII. I am not editing the video but I have been asked to convert it to HDV, DVCAM, DVC Pro, 3/4" SP?
Or copy the footage to an " SD DVD " disc? How do I do this? Do I just burn the files to the disc or do I convert it to a non HD file?
I have Neoscene, which I use to edit the huge files. But I don't think it converts the files to any of those formats.
Any suggestions? |

->> Take it to a post-production house and bill the client for it.

->> Mark,
I thought about that, but I don't have enough time. I have to send it out tomorrow. I shot it today. I wasn't aware that the editor didn't edit on Adobe Premiere or FCP, which can both handle the files without conversion.
It was a last minute type of deal.
Thanks for the suggestion. |

->> Armando, if you want to tackle it, download MPEG Streamclip. Hit Apple-B, add files, select, save to batch, select quicktime, then you'll see a range of options for what you need (no idea about the 3/4"SP, but probably an easy google). You can also do this with FCP, using the Log&Transfer "L&T" function, but MPEGStreamclip is fine.
You might also try emailing PF Bentley, who knows this stuff inside and out. Or, ask the same question on lafcpug.org, and you should have your answer shortly. |

| ->> Thanks Robert. I appreciate it. Someone else just emailed me to download MPEG Streamclip. I'll check it out. |

->> Armando,
I pulled up MPEGStreamClip (a great tool, BTW), and checked. It may not be able to help you out, the output formats for version 1.93b2 include: 3G AIFFF FLC iPod, Applce TV, iPhone, Quicktime movie, AU, AVI, Wave, DV stream, Image Sequence, iPhone (cellular), and MPEG-4.
The requirement for 3/4" SP made me wonder if this are file formats or tape formats. Wikipedia is my friend, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DV), While the signal is laid down on the tape in different ways, these are basically different types of physical tapes. SD DVD would just be a regular standard definition DVD. Sort of a misleading statement, you can put HD video on a DVD, just not as much as you could onto Blu-Ray. Doubly misleading since you can just use a DVD as a computer disk.
Try importing the files through FCP (or iMovie for that matter) and burning them to DVD as SD video. Also deliver a separate DVD with the raw files on it as a computer disk. The editor might be able to pull the shots they need from that. |

->> Ben,
Thanks. You are correct, about the formats being tape formats. I used MPEGStreamclip and it converted the video to a DV file - but let's just say the quality is poor compared to the files from the 5DMKII.
I may just have to send them a DVD with the Raw files and let them figure it out.
Thanks for the help.

->> A,
At minimum, I'd convert the files to a couple of different high codecs, so they'll have options. I work with Prores 422 (regular is fine), but H.264 would be good too. If they're TV types, they may want AVID files. Oh, be sure to turn off the interlacing (uncheck Interlaced Scaling) with the 5dMkII files.
Good luck, and if you have a large batch of files, it'll take a while to run (as you've discovered).
Ben, thanks for the info, good to learn more about this stuff. . . |

->> This is probably too late but if you're on a Mac and have Roxio Toast 10 Titanium all you have to do is drop the .mov file onto the window in the Video tab and have it set to DVD-Video. This will transcode the video into an SD DVD video disc that will be letterboxed (I assume you shot it in HD so it's in 16:9 format).
It will take awhile to transcode but it will result in a DVD video disc that is playable in a normal DVD player at standard-def.
I used to do this all the time to burn my edited HD footage onto an autoplay DVD disc. |
