Daisy chain a camcorder

->> Hi all,

I just upgraded my old iMac 24 to a new i5 27 inches. Unfortunately in the new mac there is only one FW800 port.
SHould be possible to daisy chain my videocamera to the firewire disks or should I buy an hub in order to capture to an external firewire disk?

Thanks
A

->> I don't think your daisy chain will work. Here's why...

Using one firewire port for two devices simultaneously would require two firewire buses especially with the data throughput that video requires. If you got it to work, there's a very high probability of dropped frames.

Using one port would mean the data makes a u-turn on the same firewire it was received on to go back on a hard disk. That's bi-directional flow. It's much better if the data can use the entire bandwidth of a cable/port to go one way onto a disk.

What you need is a Firestore hard drive, which would remove the Mac from playing middleman on your video capture. I'm unsure if these work universally or not, but they're hardly cheap.

->> I've done the daisy chain and it works fine, provided the rpms of your drive are fast enough, and you're using the faster interface (800) to connect to the computer.

The system should be: Camera HD iMac

The folks from LaCie endorse it in their user manual - search "daisy chain":
http://www.lacie.com/download/manual/d2_quadra_en.pdf

The caveat is that the entire system will only be as fast as the slowest bus speed, but it does work. Also, you can only use one type of interface successfully. You can't mix FW with USB or SATA.

Hope that helps.

->> Does your drive not have a 400 connection? You can use both the 400 and 800 FW at the same time, but not the other interfaces.
