->> I decided to bring an old, unreliable Nikkor 80-400mm lens along while shooting hockey today (company lens). But when I attached the lens my camera (a D3) read ERR. So I just used my 70-300mm instead.
Unfortunately the 80-400mm lens left a nasty surprise, a friggin screw which fell out of the lens and into my camera.
The screw apparently sat inside my camera the entire game while I shot high speed bursts. Nothing seemed wrong until the end of the game when my camera first had difficulty focusing and then failing to shoot in bursts. Suddenly most of my frames were black.
It wasn't until I got back to the office that I found and removed the screw.
The camera now reads ERR and every shot is a black frame. Even the live view is all black (with what appears to be a few white pixels visible, like stars in an old Atari video game).
So two questions. First, how bad is this. Second, any suggestions where to send it for repairs. And third, if this has happened to you, is there a quick fix I might try before sending my body away for X amount of time? |

->> Most likely the screw jammed and or broke the shutter blades. Put a fresh battery in the D3 and then lock the mirror up in the sensor cleaning position. That will let you look into the mirror box and see whether the mirror flips up and if the shutter is opening. It will also let you see if the AA filter on the sensor got scratched.
Send it to Nikon a new shutter just cost me $400 more or less last month.. $437 I think.... |

| ->> Well, it's on its way to the Nikonian land of broken cameras. Crossing my fingers it comes back before June! Don't suppose anyone has a D3 they want to loan me in the meantime ... ? :) |
