Broken Canon 50mm f/1.4
Andrew Spear, Photographer, Assistant

->> Hey guys. So, I cracked the barrel on my 50 f/1.4. Any idea how much it is to repair, or if it's worth it? I'm leaning towards no but just wanted to ask before I sent it in. I think I might just buy a new one and try to unload this on ebay as a broken item.

Any thoughts?

->> I've had mixed luck having lenses repaired. A Canon rep told me once there's so much stuff inside the lens, it's almost impossible to get it aligned perfectly on a repair. My experience has been that a lens is never quite the same after a repair.

If mine broke I don't think I would get it repaired... I would seriously consider replacing it with the Sigma 50 1.4.

->> I replaced my 50 1.4 with a 50 f1.2 and never looked back. It's expensive and focuses kind of slow, but it's very sharp at f2 and beyond very well built.

->> I broke mine in South Africa and the part needed to fix it wasn't available in the southern hemisphere, but it would have cost around 80% of the original value of the lens to get it fixed.

I've since moved onto the Zeiss ZE 1.4. It's not autofocus, but as a walkabout and studio lens, it's maybe my favorite piece of glass.

->> Try giving Mark a call at Midstate Repair in RI. He just quoted me a good estimated price to fix mine. I don't have a cracked barrel, but he's suggesting replacing the barrel on mine from the symptoms I have described.

->> Midstate is the best. Anything the factory can't do, the boys in Warwick can.

Also, Andy, you might really dig the Zeiss model.

->> While I'm sure the Midstate guys can do miracles, they don't do it every day. We sent a lens off for an estimate, had it returned as beyond their ability, then sent it off to the manufacturer who asked why we sent the same lens Midstate had there several weeks earlier...
