Convert TO DisplayPort
Chuck Steenburgh, Photographer

->> Just got a 20" Dell Ultrasharp as a second monitor. Nice, but the dang thing has a DisplayPort input and no HDMI input.

For the life of my, I can't find anything that converts a signal from HDMI, DVI, or VGA to DisplayPort. Lots of stuff going the OTHER way, and stuff that converts to MINI DisplayPort, but nothing, and I mean nothing, that I can hook a non-DisplayPort PC up to the DisplayPort input.

Anybody know of anything?

->> Have you visited with Dell? Does it not have DVI or VGA on the back at all?

HDMI is just one of several connectors it should have. The Dell 24 I have has many choices for connection to many different devices.

->> Hi Chuck

The Dell Ultrasharps have only DVI and DisplayPort since it's a professional product. HDMI is meant as a consumer product.

But there are two options

DVI to HDMI

DisplayPort to HDMI

->> Kirby - That's the one, 21.5" (sorry Darren). But the DisplayPort to HDMI cable you list is exactly what I don't need. :) I need HDMI to DisplayPort. Not the same thing.

I realize it has other connectors - VGA and DVI - but for this particular appplication I need to use the DisplayPort input.

->> Chuck here's a tech forum post I found referring to another Dell monitor, don't know if its yours. Post is a couple years old. Has a different adapter that might work.

->> You won't find anything at a reasonable price to do this. Unfortunately due to the stuff that has been built in to the DisplayPort standard any adapter will require active circuitry...it's really annoying. You can thank the movie industry for this beautiful annoyance.

->> Andrew, I'm thinking that's the issue. The adapters Erik pointed out, like those that Kirby did, are all one-way DisplayPort to HDMI - not the other way.

Guess it's like a sex change. Easier to lop something off than add new circuitry.

->> Chuck, http://www.startech.com is a company I use quite and refer quite often. They have good quality product with fair prices. Not entirely sure they have the right adapt, but here is what they seem to show for HDMI/DP adapters; http://us.startech.com/search?search_term=hdmi+to+displayport&autocomplete=

->> Good link Mike...as I stated you'd need an active circuitry adapter. Looks like startech has one. I can't vouch for the company but this looks like It will work, it is however not cheap at all.
