| ->> I was browsing through the "frozen moments" photos on NHL.com and came across #53 (can't provide a link to it directly) and was curious if at the SPTF there is a photographers cut out in the boards as well as the glass? this looks like a low angle shot and i've never seen a place to shoot from below the glass? has anyone shot there or know what's going on with this photo? |

| ->> Hard to tell without seeing it, but it is probably David Klutho's from Sports Illustrated. He has a hole (covered by glass) at the bottom of the boards at the Red Wings I believe. |

| ->> I stand corrected. It's Scot Audette's at the Tampa Bay Lightning. Probably the same kind of hole, though. |

| ->> is that something special they worked out with the facilities staff or were the rinks built with those included. i've only worked at the boston garden, and i'm almost positive they don't have similar holes...wish they did though. |

| ->> Most places don't have that. I'm sure it took a lot of work and negotiations to get the holes put in. I'm pretty sure Klutho was the first to do it, though. |

It takes a lot of work to get a "Klutho hole" cut in the boards. It goes just above the bottom dasher and has plexiglass covering.
David has turned out some incredible shots from there. I think he first had it cut into his hometown arena of St. Louis and a few other rinks have followed suit, but not many. I know one team photographer who lobbied for years to get one in his arena and was close when the PR and front office staff changed and he was back at square one. |

| ->> yeah, thats the angle...wish my local rink had it to, would make high school games a lot more fun than shooting through dirty glass |

->> The Lightning put in a whole new board/glass system over the summer, and as part of the 'redo' Scott was able to get the holes at the base of the boards included. It's set up for a remote only.
An example is here: http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/108275582/National-Hockey-League
Scott was able to do this as a result of his long-term relationship with the club as a team photographer, and them seeing the value in quality, professional photography...an unfortunately rare combination these days. |
