| ->> I personally don't think Damon Winter was to blame in any of the contest "mess". He is a GREAT photographer. I blame the judges. In all the years I have been involved with contests (both running some and participating in them) I have found judges usually a) disregard the rules b) don't know the rules or c) in extreme cases think it hysterical to make a joke of the contest (I saw this in the 80's when judges at the SSC thought it would be "funny" to award prizes to any photo with a duck in it) I'm not blaming all judges in every contest. I'm just saying if a shooter wants to push the envelope and see what they can get away with they will. if a purported judge of a PROFESSIONAL PHOTOJOURNALISM contest cannot tell that a photo has been over manipulated or is breaking the rules why the hell are they a judge? guess what? the dirty little secret. it's INCESTUOUS. that has been the rule for years. I'm not being crabby or a sore loser because the fact of the matter is I've been totally disgusted for years over the way many in this field tout ethics, because, after all they ARE the high and mighty, then they turn around and award prizes to photos that obviously violate the ethics policy we're supposed to follow. I will forever not understand how we are supposed to abide by a certain set of journalism ethics when we submit photos to our newspapers but there is a different "unwritten" standard for a contest. prove me wrong in this statement. all I'm asking is that they just be honest....if you want to award work that is made to look "pretty" just say it and do it. but stop this bullshit of acting like you don't know you're awarding photos that violate the rules. |

->> Chuck, I get your point but I think the onus of removing illegal entries should be the responsibility of the contest coordinators.
Once an entry is put in front of a judge, there is an assumption that it follows the contest's guidelines and is eligible to be honored.
Like you, I have judged many contests and it is a slippery slope when a judge starts making assumptions about photoshop or technological issues with an image. |

->> Wow Chuck -- Maybe dial it back a notch, amigo, or I'm gonna have to mail you some of my Lotrel.
Seriously, this is, after all, just a contest, right? Damon's gonna get, what -- a piece of wood with his name on it, maybe a little cash? Did they up the awards or something? Is he getting a small island or the gift of immortality?
Point is, between this and the WPP thing, I think everyone just needs to calm down. It's not the end of the world. I'm sure something will happen next year that gives us all a reason to take to the streets with torches and pitchforks.
Aren't there more important things to get worked up about? Underbidding freelancers, greedy newspaper companies, the housing market, Bieber fever, the environment? Just seems like a whole lot of energy is being wasted on something that's really not *that* big a deal in the big picture.
Just sayin' ...

->> I have to say I agree with Chuck 100%. I also think those of you who say "It's just a contest" don't really get it. This isn't an award at the local art show. It's POY for christ's sake.
I remember a few years ago when a photographer at a very large newspaper in NC was raked through the coals on his entries, that I'm thinking actually won, but changed the rules for NCPA photo entries. If I remember correctly, the judges were the ones rightly raising the issue. I could be wrong, Chuck would know better than I. We even coined a term similar to the one from The Office where they say "I Shruted it." Not saying the circumstances are exactly the same, but it's a situation where the judges actually questioned the rules instead of blatantly throwing them out.
My beef isn't with the ethical issue of the software used to make these. Hell, I wish there was options like when you could use varying film, format or types of cameras in the film days to give you a variance on the feel of an image. There isn't though, unless you want that nostalgic feel of a noisy 1 series digital.
I just thinkthink taking the stance "it's only a contest" not only discredits the POY and iPOY as a common art show, but also devalues any credibility so many have worked to create in the photojournalism community worldwide. |
