Tours of the Media Center

->> I'm a big follower of Formula One and over the past few days, the teams have been doing pre-season testing in Jerez, Spain. I was kind of skimming twitter today when I saw something rather disturbing from one of the phtographers covering the testing session...Apparently, the circuit is doing guided tours of the media center DURING the testing sessions!?!?!?

Has anyone encountered this in any other sport or ever heard of something like that? I mean my lord, we all trust each other (sometimes too much) but I know I've left gear in a media center and gone out to shoot before and not thought twice about doing it.

->> People want to do what we do and, for some reason, find the places we work interesting.

When working White House weekend duty we had WH staff members bringing family and friends through interrupting our nap time. Admittedly, this is more secure than a general tour and the briefing room is seen on national TV so folks want to see it in person. I would bet the tours of the media center are not for general public but for sponsors etc. But I could be wrong.

Whether tours are offered or not, I would always lock things, hide things, or take gear with you. Frankly, more stuff has been stolen from press rooms by fellow members of the press than from the same rooms by security guards or general public. I know the last few days or the Olympics always turns out to be a time to really watch your gear closely as some not-so-kind press brethren who are leaving feel they can grab some gear and get out of the country before it is noticed. Not a pleasant thought, but, sadly, it happens.

->> whether the white house or a race track, the media center isn't your hotel room. not surprised to hear the host staff parading folks through the media facilities. it's their building, right?

->> My favorite media room tour moment.

One Saturday or Sunday morning we are gathered around a monitor in the TV camera deck. Some nice seeming older lady getting a tour of the White House briefing room smiles and says something along the lines of "waiting for something interesting" or some attempt to be humorous -- lines we had all heard hundreds of times.

One of the TV photojournalists looks up grumpily and growls "We're trying to watch a movie"

Smile vanishes from her face, she turns and heads back to her tour.

->> In any of the stadiums I have worked in over here you have to produce your pass to gain access and during games there are never any tours scheduled. The good thing is that it is normally the same guys on the door all the time and they soon get to know who should be allowed in and you should not. Having said that access is normally so well curtailed via several layers of security that the chance of unauthorised folk gettng near your gear is about zero. Hats off to the IRFU.
