Liability insurance for a photographer
Robert O'Rourk, Photographer

->> I searched the archive but did not find any discussion about liability insurance coverage. My present supplier, Hartford, has indicated that my renewal for a $3M policy will be raised about 20%. I am thus looking for a possible new provider.

I have several customers that require me to submit a form from the insurance company stating I have liability insurance, so I think it wise to continue carrying it.

Suggestions would be appreciated

->> Very wise to carry it. One of the favorite pastimes in the USA is lawsuits.
I use Hill and Usher but have all my gear listed too...theft, accidental damage, etc..
Well worth the money when some rug rat bumps into your lens hood and get's an ear cut off.

->> I have just the liability for about $180 a year for the $1M/$2M threshold most require through Erie Insurance, attached as a business, to my homeowners. Separate policy though, so there is no chance of a crossover.

->> I have business insurance through Farmers Insurance, I needed coverage so that I could cover racing events in the state park system. I called my agent and he worked up a package that best suited my needs. It covers all my gear as well as the contents of my home office and my office on the road. If you are a member of PPA or ASMP you could check with those organizations to see if they have insurance available for there members.

->> There are several ways to solve liability issues, but the key thing is that you're being proactive and staying out in front of this, to protect yourself and your business.

Over the years I have stumbled across several factors to consider:

--your legal standing impacts the type of coverage you might need, so checking with your attorney before getting a policy is a good idea. If you're incorporated or an LLC it's different than if you're on your own;

-- groups like NPPA and ASMP offer coverage as a member benefit:

http://asmp.org/articles/member-benefits.html

-- although I don't use them I know folks who get their insurance through TC&P Co. in Southern California:

Good luck.

->> I have the same as Patrick...$2mil/$4mil through TCP. That along with about $35000 in equipment coverage runs about $900 a year. Not cheap, but worth the peace of mind to know I'm covered if little Johnny decides to knock over one of my light stands on someone else's head.
