AT&T iPhone tethering problem using FTP

->> Ok, so now that AT&T made tethering officially available for the iPhone I went ahead and paid the extra fee for this feature.
I've been using it for a couple of months now and it's very reliable and fast for just getting online. However, about 50% of the time that I try to FTP images via Photo Mechanic with it I get an error that says something along the lines of "unable to make connection to server". I get this error despite the fact that I can browse the net, check my email, actually email images, etc. from the current connection... so I know I'm online at that location and the signal is always fairly strong.
Also, I get this error when trying to FTP images to clients (several of them) that I send stuff to all the time and that I KNOW the loggin and password saved in Photo Mechanic are accurate.
I ALWAYS have a second internet device (a Sprint MiFi) with me from a separate carrier to use as a back up in the field and if I switch to my MiFi or connect to a wifi signal then the images start sending without any problem.
I asked someone at AT&T and got, "OK, I'm sorry you're having this problem and I'm happy to help you. Now, what is an FTP? And when you say 'tethering' I'm not exactly sure what you mean?"
Any thoughts? |

->> Sounds like AT&T is blocking access to the FTP ports. Most likely 20 and 21. You'll have to check with the server admin to see if there is an alternate port that you can use that AT&T isn't blocking.
I have the same problem sending email using tether for the BB. |

| ->> Hmm, well Eric that's no fun. Thanks for the info. The odd thing is that half the time it works without any problem. Maybe I'll just stick with the MiFi because getting a hold of server admins at some of these places would be a week-long affair. |

->> Well, there's a reason why companies like Camera Bits (Photo Mechanic) and Think Tank Photo enjoy the reputation that they do.
I just got an email from Kirk over at Camera Bits explaining what's happening and offering a solution... less than an hour after posting this question here. I was waiting until business hours to call them but now I don't have to.
Oh and the answer: The DNS may not always be working when tethered so I have to use the actually IP address rather than the symbolic name which has to be translated into an IP address.
Thanks Kirk |

->> Brian,
Thanks for posting.
On a Mac you can easily determine a site's numbered address rather than name.
Under Utilities go to Network Utility and select TraceRoute
Type in the name of the ftp server
Hit Trace
You should get a quick listing of data.
The IP address will appear in parenthesis after the name.
You can hit Stop on the trace and then have the number to insert in your ftp program. |

| ->> Thanks George, you just saved me a lot of Googling... as you know I'm not much of a tech guy. |

->> I've been using fetch for the last 4 months without any problems. I'll try PM tonight, & see it it works with it. I do have the same problem as you with my iPad & PDAnet. But hope they can fix it as I have unlimited data for it.
Marc. |
